Jumanji star Kevin Hart’s new movie Fatherhood is being released tomorrow (June 18) on Netflix, and it’s received some interesting early reviews.
The drama’s release kept getting put on hold due to the pandemic, until the streaming service acquired the movie rights from Sony Pictures earlier this year.
Fatherhood comes from Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company and sees a widowed dad (played by Hart) left to raise his young daughter through doubts, fears and dirty diapers. American Pie‘s Paul Weitz directs.

The New York Times
“Despite Weitz’s sensitive direction and a superb cast – including Frankie R Faison as Marian’s patient husband, DeWanda Wise as Matt’s patient love interest and Paul Reiser as his patient boss – Fatherhood can’t quite deliver.”
AV Club
“Fatherhood does, thankfully, avoid the biggest possible melodramatic swings… It stays well within the bounds of parenting struggles that seem vital in the moment, then turn into funny anecdotes later on. Most of the time, the film forgets the second part.”
The Only Critic
“It’s nice to see a genuinely wholesome, down to earth comedy, set in reality without the burdens of tacky sight gags boggling down momentum. For a change, audiences will see Hart breathe between sentences and listen to what others around him are saying.”

The Guardian
“Hart comports himself with a more dialed-back version of the jittery everyman affability he’s developed over decades in the comedy circuit, a schtick that reads as just that – a pose, a well-honed affectation.”
The Hollywood Reporter
“Fatherhood benefits from impressive talent and craftsmanship, as well as an abundance of poignant and wistful moments. Though predictable, it still manages to work a certain heartstring-tugging magic. For this kind of flick, I think that’s all you can really ask for.”
Variety
“The movie accomplishes what it sets out to do. It transitions Hart from playfully scowling cutup to earnest heartfelt actor, and it does so in a way that, at times, is genuinely touching, even as the audience can see every sanded-down conflict and market-tested beat falling into place.”
Fatherhood will be available to stream on Netflix from June 18.
