Cristiano Ronaldo made sure to thank his team-mates after becoming Al-Nassr’s leading scorer in the Saudi Pro League. Al-Nassr defeated Al-Taawoun 2-1 on Friday, with Ronaldo netting the winner as Ange Postecoglou’s side have started their league campaign with four consecutive wins. Ronaldo scored his second goal of the season, and his 104th overall for Al-Nassr in the competition, seeing him surpass Mohammad Al Sahlawi’s previous record of 103.
The Portugal forward also scored the 978th goal of his career, as he targets the 1000-goal mark before retirement. “Very happy, it’s a great achievement, but it’s not just for Cristiano,” Ronaldo said when asked about his latest record. “I must thank my teammates, because without them this would have been impossible. “But I’m really happy for the fans too, they always support me and I’m very proud of that.”

Despite the narrow scoreline, Al-Nassr were quite comfortable against Al-Taawoun, producing 2.0 xG from 16 shots, 1.21 of which came from set pieces, while restricting their opponents to just five attempts. Ronaldo only took two shots but was most responsible for most of his side’s xG (0.93), while Sadio Mane and Joao Felix both created a match-high four chances.
“Step by step, we didn’t start the match well, but we scored, and we equalised,” added Ronaldo. “And then in the second half we played well, and our reaction was wonderful. The team played better and faster, and we created chances and deserved the win.”
