Roma have announced that they will no longer participate in the International Champions Cup this summer.
Roma were due to contest friendlies against Guadalajara, Arsenal and Benfica in the US next month.
However, the Giallorossi released a statement on Wednesday, explaining that ‘unforeseen involvement in the preliminary rounds of the Europa League’ forced them to pull out.
“We were delighted to once again receive the invitation from the ICC to play in the tournament, and were very much looking forward to participating,” CEO Guido Fienga told the club’s official website.
“We looked at every available option in order to avoid withdrawing, however, in the end the decision had to be made in light of next season’s commitments.
“I apologise to all the fans hoping to come and watch us this summer. We share your disappointment, but I want to assure you all that we will return soon.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to apologise to the ICC for having to withdraw, but nevertheless wish them a hugely successful tournament in our absence.”
The Lupi finished sixth in Serie A last season, meaning they will enter the Europa League at the second qualifying phase, which kicks off on July 20.
Their squad will also have to report back for training at the earlier time of late June to prepare for qualifying.
