Every August, India and Pakistan mark their Independence Days a day apart. India celebrates Independence Day on August 15, while Pakistan observes it on August 14. But the difference does not mean the two countries were legally granted independence on separate dates. The story goes back to the Indian Independence Act of 1947, the Partition of British India and the way the transfer of power ceremonies were organised.

Pakistan’s Independence Day is observed on August 14, largely because of the timing of its formal transfer of power ceremony in Karachi. Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of British India, attended the ceremony in Karachi on August 14 before travelling to Delhi for India’s independence ceremony at midnight. Pakistan initially also used August 15 in official references to its independence. However, by 1948, Pakistan had shifted its official Independence Day celebrations to August 14.
The date also carried religious significance in 1947, as August 14 coincided with the 27th day of Ramadan. Did Pakistan become Independent one day before India? Not exactly. The Indian Independence Act designated August 15, 1947, as the appointed day for both India and Pakistan. The difference in the dates of the official ceremonies was largely a result of the schedule for the transfer of power. Mountbatten could not conduct the ceremonies in Karachi and Delhi at the same time.
He therefore attended Pakistan’s ceremony in Karachi on August 14 before returning to Delhi for the midnight transfer of power. Why was August 15 chosen?
The date was selected by Mountbatten as the deadline for the transfer of power after the original plan had envisaged British withdrawal by June 1948. However, growing communal violence and deteriorating law and order led Mountbatten to bring forward the transfer of power to August 1947. Mountbatten later said he had chosen August 15 partly because it marked the second anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. Today, the two countries observe their national days on different dates. While the dates are different, both celebrations trace their origins to the same historic transition in August 1947, when British rule came to an end and Partition created two new nations.
