How do you judge Eddie Howe? The Newcastle United manager having left St James’ Park at the end of July 2026. I have looked back across the last 55 months. Which Premier League clubs have picked up the most points in recent seasons?

The period covered is January 2022 onwards. So four and a half seasons added up. There have been 14 Premier League clubs that have been in the top tier for all of the most recent five seasons.

In his four full seasons Eddie Howe won the Carabao Cup (the manager and his players had to beat Liverpool, Arsenal (twice), Chelsea, Forest, Brentford and Wimbledon), qualified twice for the Champions League, got to two cup finals, in eight domestic cup attempts NUFC reached the semi-finals or beyond three times and quarter-finals or beyond five times, plus the small matter of Newcastle for the very first time reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League. Let us ignore though those ‘minor’ details for a moment. Only concentrate on the Premier League, where it is an easy equal comparison when judging Eddie Howe and Newcastle United against the other 13 PL clubs who have been in the top tier for all of the past five seasons. So these are the points totals for each of them, across their last 171 Premier League matches.

No surprises at the very top. Manchester City just edging out Arsenal by nine points, then Liverpool another 22 points behind the Gunners. Then what do you know, Eddie Howe managed more points with Newcastle United across the last four and a half seasons, the last 171 EPL games, than all the rest.

Eddie Howe and NUFC with 23 points more than Chelsea, nine more than Man U, 46 more than Tottenham, one more than Aston Villa, 36 more than Brighton, 91 more than Everton, 67 more than Palace and so on. Those are the Eddie Howe facts, make what you will of them when you judge his record at Newcastle United these last four and a half years.
