Four farming unions in the United Kingdom have renewed calls for a ban on imports of Brazilian meat to align with European restrictions.
In a letter to Angela Eagle, Defra Secretary of State, the National Farmers Union (NFU), NFU Scotland, Ulster Farmers’ Union and NFU Cymru asked for a UK-wide ban on Brazilian Products of Animal Origin (POAO) from Sept. 3, which is when revised European rules come into force.
The groups said that failing to act could put public health, farm businesses and public confidence in UK food at risk. It has been a month since Tom Bradshaw, NFU president, urged the government to introduce a ban during a meeting with Eagle.
