The Supreme Court on Monday, August 24, took on record fresh status reports filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) on their probes into alleged financial irregularities involving companies of the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG). The reports were filed in a public interest litigation (PIL) by former Union secretary EAS Sarma, who has sought a court-monitored investigation into the alleged ₹40,000 crore bank loan fraud involving ADAG companies. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench that two fresh status reports had been filed, one each by the ED and CBI. The court said, “These are taken on record.”

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing in the matter, asked the agencies to also place their charge sheets before the court and said it needed to be seen whether they had examined the role of the “top management” of the companies.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant asked, “Top management means only one person, right?”
Mehta responded, “We have examined the top management.”
The court listed the matter for further hearing on another date. SC had directed CBI, ED to probe allegations The Supreme Court had earlier directed the CBI and ED to investigate the allegations and submit status reports. The case was listed on August 24 for further hearing. In February, the court directed the agencies to conduct a fair and prompt probe into the allegations after noting concerns over the progress of the investigations. The PIL was filed by Sarma seeking a court-monitored probe into alleged banking and corporate fraud involving ADAG companies. The CBI has since registered seven cases against the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group based on complaints by public sector banks and Life Insurance Corporation of India.
According to the government, the alleged loss involved in these cases totals ₹27,337 crore. In May, the CBI said it had conducted searches at seven locations in Mumbai, Gurugram and Bengaluru in connection with a case involving Reliance Communications.
The searches covered premises linked to the company’s former CEO, CFO and directors who served during 2015-17. The CBI had earlier arrested two senior Reliance Communications executives, D Vishwanath and Anil Kalya, in April in connection with the cases. The Supreme Court is monitoring the investigation into the cases involving the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group. In July, the court had also declined to direct the arrest of any individual, saying it would not be fair for the court to do so. The observation came after a submission by Bhushan that the agencies had arrested lower-level officers but not the alleged top management. (Edited by : Ajay Vaishnav)
