The injury has officially ended Monds’ high school football career at Vero Beach (FL) Wonderful “Champ” Monds, a 4-star 2027 quarterback who committed to Notre Dame on May 1, was in the midst of his final high school football season with Vero Beach (Fla.). The Fighting Indians on Friday hosted St. Frances Academy (Md.), one of the top teams in the country.
Monds – Vero Beach’s starting QB at 6-foot-3, 230 pounds – was not suited up. According to On3/Rivals, Monds instead had his non-throwing arm in a sling. Monds confirmed in his Instagram story on Saturday that his injury has led to an “unexpected minor procedure,” which means he will be out for the season. On top of that, Monds’ high school career has officially come to an end. “Vero Nation!
First of all I’d like to thank my coaches, teammates, supporters and the fan base for the three years, as it’s been a blessing to play here,” Monds said. “Unfortunately, that run has ended as my 2026 season has been cut short due to an unexpected minor procedure that needs to be addressed. I know that all of my guys at Vero will finish the drill without me.”
Monds won’t be able to play football for some time, but assured the Irish faithful he’ll be ready for his first season in 2027. “Even with how disappointing this is for me, I’m excited about a new start being 100% healthy in South Bend,” Monds said.

Monds appeared in just two games for the Fighting Indians this season. He completed 82% of his passes for 591 yards and seven touchdowns. On the ground, he had four rushing scores.
