We’re just a week and three days away from Texas A&M’s 2026 season opener vs. Missouri State, but for those itching for another set of SEC quarterback rankings, new On3 analyst Brooks Austin just released his Top 10 SEC QB rankings that have already made the rounds, receiving plenty of expected backlash from nearly every SEC fanbase, while newly named Alabama signal caller Keelon Russell is ranked much higher than expected. If you’ve read any of my articles from the past few days, the word “polarizing” has come up multiple times when describing redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, who is entering his second full starting season for Texas A&M after throwing for a career-high 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, which, at least for this writer, exceeded expectations. Still, the former four-star prospect entered the offseason with plenty to clean up, especially his decision-making late in games, which resulted in throwing four of his twelve interceptions in back-to-back losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the CFP. Working with private QB coach Jeff Christensen, Reed’s throwing mechanics have improved notably through 16 preseason practices, especially his deep-ball accuracy and touch, which were also problems last season.
My theory is that no matter how much Marcel Reed has improved this preseason, he won’t get a bump in most rankings, coming in at 9th overall in Brooks Austin’s SEC rankings. However, outside of Keelon Russell, South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers coming in at No. 4, and Mississippi State QB Kamario Taylor at No. 8 is quite a stretch given Sellers’ struggles to live up to his potential and Taylor’s lack of experience.
