The first child under the age of 5 has died during this year’s flu season, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.Nine people, including the child, died between Feb. 2 and 8, bringing the total number of people who have died from the flu this season to 75. More than 57 percent of the flu-related deaths have been people over the age of 65, according to the NCDHHS.The flu is creating a blood shortage, according to the Red Cross. Blood donations are badly needed, especially for people with type O blood.Doctors and nurses say it’s not too late to get the flu vaccine.
