Mirabai Chanu won India’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG) after setting a new CWG record in the snatch as well as in the clean and jerk during the women’s 48kg weightlifting competition on Sunday. Chanu lifted 85kg in the former to establish a new record, finishing the opening phase of the competition eight kilograms clear of her nearest challenger and putting herself in a commanding position heading into the clean and jerk.

She then went on to lift 105 kg in clean and jerk, smashing another tournament record to clinch her third straight CWG gold medal. The Manipuri weightlifter entered the event as one of India’s strongest medal hopes and immediately justified her billing with another record-breaking performance.

Earlier in the day, Chanambam Rishikanta Singh had won India’s first silver medal of the Glasgow Games in the men’s 60kg category. The 28-year-old also set a Commonwealth Games record in the snatch with a lift of 121kg before adding 143kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 264kg. Rishikanta eventually finished second behind Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq, giving India its second medal of the Games after para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar’s bronze on Friday. After a relatively quiet opening three days in Glasgow, India’s medal challenge gathered momentum on Sunday with the weightlifters delivering record-breaking performances. First Published:
