A dirty TV screen can be cleaned at home, but using the wrong cleaning product can do more harm than good. The display is more delicate than a window or mirror, and some cleaning products can damage its surface. For people wondering if soapy water is safe for cleaning a TV screen, the answer depends on how it is used. A very mild soap solution can be used for stubborn marks, but it should never be poured or sprayed directly onto the display.

How to clean a TV screen with soapy water

First, switch off the TV and allow the screen to cool down. Then mix a very small amount of mild dish soap with distilled water. After that, dip a clean microfiber cloth into the solution and wring it out thoroughly. The cloth should only be slightly damp. Then, wipe the screen without applying pressure. Once the marks are removed, use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe away any remaining moisture. What you should never use on a TV screen

However, regular household cleaning products should be kept away from the TV screen.

Glass cleaners, disinfectant sprays and multi-purpose cleaners may contain chemicals such as ammonia or alcohol. These may damage the protective coating on modern TV screens

Paper towels, tissues, old clothes and rough rags are also best avoided as they can scratch the display or leave fibres behind.

Although paper towels feel soft, but can contain wood fibres that may cause tiny scratches. Similarly, rubbing alcohol, bleach, acetone, kitchen sponges and other abrasive cleaning tools can damage the screen. Avoid the use of baby wipes and wet wipes because they may contain fragrances, moisturisers, or other cleaning chemicals.
