Expect less drama in Colorado football’s second game than in the Buffaloes’ opener at Georgia Tech. A late touchdown and a walk-off blocked field goal helped Deion Sanders leave Atlanta with a smile on his face after a 14-13 Week 1 win.
Colorado returns home in Week 2 to face FCS opponent Weber State in the first meeting between the programs. The Wildcats are 1-1, coming off a 47-42 loss to Southern Utah. Second-year quarterback Julian Lewis looked a little anxious himself last week until he engineered the go-ahead touchdown drive on his final possession. This time, he’ll be able to relax more and build some confidence against an FCS opponent. Why Weber State can keep it close: If Lewis plays jittery again, which is not likely. Or if Colorado turns the ball over, which didn’t happen last week. Or if the Buffs give up kick returns for touchdowns, which happened last week but also isn’t likely this time. Second-year quarterback Julian Lewis redeemed himself late in the Week 1 win at Georgia Tech when he led the Buffs downfield to take the lead with 37 seconds left. Before the final drive, Lewis had completed only 10 of 21 passes for 84 yards and no touchdowns. But then he found his moxie when he needed to on that last possession of eight plays and 75 yards. He completed 4 of 6 passes for 60 yards on that final possession, which ended with a 20-yard touchdown pass to tight end Charlie Williams — Lewis’ longest pass of the night. Lewis compiled a 39-4 record as a three-year starter in high school and has the potential to lead Colorado to a special season if he adjusts well to new coordinator Brennan Marion’s ‘Go-Go’ offense. Sanders announced second-year Colorado player Chauncey Gooden “was the only interior lineman in all of Division I football that played both ways” last week when the Buffaloes beat Georgia Tech in Atlanta, 14-13. Gooden, who is listed at 6-3, 380 pounds, started on the offensive line and played 65 snaps there while also ringing up a tackle during seven snaps on defense, according to Colorado athletics.
Sanders said in August that Gooden was “killing people in practice.” Then the Nashville native was part of an offensive line that gave up only one sack against Georgia Tech. Now he’s also part of an upstart all-new defense that looks to help Colorado improve to 2-0 this week as a five-touchdown favorite against the Wildcats. “Heisman winner Travis Hunter (was) the best player to do it,” Gooden told reporters Tuesday on playing both ways. “So it’s just like, the fact that I can do what he did, even in the trenches, it’s just remarkable.”
Deion Sanders says don’t overlook Weber State “I promise you, we’re not taking anything for granted, because I know darn well if I was on that team, I would come here and want to show out, so that maybe somebody could recognize me and notice me and maybe grab me out of the (transfer) portal and pay me handsomely,” Sanders said.
“That’s what I would be thinking if I was on that team.”

UCF What this game means for Colorado football? If Colorado wins, the Buffs will be 2-0 for the first time since Sanders’ first season in Boulder in 2023, when they started 3-0 before finishing 4-8. Coming off a disappointing 2025 season, the Buffaloes will take any silver lining it can get. Already with a Power conference road win under its belt, Colorado will get another shot next week at Northwestern. Win in Evanston, and a potential bowl bid could be in the Buffs’ future.
