Texas A&M’s 14th preseason practice was dominated, in the first half, at least, by starting quarterback Marcel Reed, who was highly efficient, especially on deep throws, including a 50-yard touchdown bomb to star wide receiver Mario Craver, and completing passes to nearly every projected starting wide receiver on the roster with swagger, but struggled towards the end of the scrimmage. However, even after throwing two late interceptions, Texas A&M’s cornerback room was sticky in coverage to finish out strong against what is nationally considered one of the top wide receiver rooms in the country, as both units won multiple battles, while projected starting cornerbacks Dezz Ricks, Julio Humphrey, and transfer Rickey Gibson recorded multiple pass breakups and interceptions. Texas A&M’s 2026 secondary, especially the safety rotation led by Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe, now features Colorado transfer Tawfiq Byard, who is expected to serve a hybrid role in coach Mike Elko and defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill’s defense. Given Elko and Hemphill’s development background in the secondary, the expectations for this unit remain sky-high.
