Urinary tract and other infections may trigger strokes, a study has suggested.
US researchers found a range of infections were all associated with an increased likelihood of an ischemic stroke – the most common type, caused by blocked blood vessels in the brain.
Infections including skin, urinary tract, septicaemia (blood infection), abdominal and respiratory were all linked with an increased risk.
UTI showed the strongest link, with more than three times the increased risk within 30 days of infection, according to the Icahn School of Medicine, New York. .
