UP, Bihar in rain zone as Delhi moves past days of heavy showers

The rain spell is likely to ease over Delhi and parts of northwest India on Tuesday, September 8, even as Bihar, West Bengal and parts of Uttar Pradesh remain under pressure from heavy rainfall. A low-pressure area over central Uttar Pradesh is driving the weather over north and east India.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rain over Bihar through September 9, with isolated heavy rainfall likely from September 8-10. Bihar, already reeling from widespread flooding and swollen rivers, could see little respite from the wet conditions. The state recorded 12 cm of rain at Laukahi in Madhubani in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Monday. The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in Bihar through the week. In West Bengal and Sikkim, the weather is likely to remain active, with fairly widespread to widespread rain over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim through September 13.

Gangetic West Bengal is also likely to see widespread rain through September 10, with heavy rainfall possible through September 9. East Uttar Pradesh is another area to watch on Tuesday, with isolated heavy rainfall forecast. West Uttar Pradesh could also see isolated rain, while rainfall activity over Uttarakhand is expected to be more scattered.

For Delhi, the recent spell of heavy rain is set to ease significantly. The capital is forecast to see a partly cloudy sky with no warning on Tuesday, with temperatures expected to range between 25°C and 34°C. The IMD expects similar conditions over the next few days. Central India will continue to see scattered showers and thunderstorms, particularly over Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha, while Konkan and Goa are likely to receive fairly widespread to widespread rainfall through September 13. Across the south, rainfall is expected to remain relatively subdued, with isolated to scattered showers over several states.
