Jeremy Hunt secured the most senior endorsement so far of the race to become the next Conservative Party leader as Penny Mordaunt said that he had the “experience, the values and the plan” to enter Downing Street.
Ms Mordaunt, the defence secretary and one of the most senior cabinet Brexiteers, had been considering making her own leadership bid but instead introduced Mr Hunt at his official campaign launch this morning.
Her endorsement came hours after Amber Rudd, the work and pensions secretary, also backed Mr Hunt, giving his campaign momentum as Michael Gove’s falters.
