At the moment most fans are rather pleased with the state of the Dallas Cowboys. The offseason was very successful. Improvements were made, plenty of them. Effort was given, truly, for the first time in a minute. At the very least there is a common goal and a will to reach it. Despite the narrative of Cowboys fans across the internet (“It’s our year!” and We Dem Boyz), we aren’t declaring anything at the moment.
We are excited and hopeful, but the stove has burned our hands way too many times. We wear oven mitts. Right now we are looking at training camp set to begin and wondering which part of the stove we are going to need them for specifically, though. The Cowboys have to figure out their cornerback situation
Who are the starting cornerbacks on the Cowboys right now in your opinion? It’s a legit question. My take: DaRon Bland, Shavon Revel, and Cobie Durant. Caleb Downs’ abilities in nickel matter here as well, but we are looking at answering with three corners for this conversation.
Just because we can put names on a two-deep does not mean that things are good, though. To be clear they could be! Bland, Revel, and Durant could form a legitimate group and all of this worrying could wind up being for not.
For all of the improvements and changes to the roster though, cornerback has been left alone (relatively speaking), and given that the Cowboys had one of the worst defense in NFL history last year, that’s worrisome. There is a particularly optimistic side of this. The Cowboys hired Christian Parker this offseason to run their defense and the secondary is his specialty. Perhaps he is simply going to be the cornerback amplifier. Think of it when you are playing a video game, hopefully this analogy lands, and pick up a weapon or suit that increases certain attributes. That’s what Christian Parker is. He’s the cornerback suit.
On some level this is the only thing that really makes sense anyway. The Cowboys know as much as we do how poor their defense was last year, and they proved that by making so many changes to it over the last few months. It’s not like they simply ignored cornerback for fun. But this is far and away the biggest question that needs to be answered during training camp for this group. Right?
