The Newcastle United team lost 4-1 against Leeds United on Monday night. A tough 90+ minutes at Elland Road.
A night when everything that could go wrong, did go wrong for this Newcastle United team. A double deflection giving Lukas Hornicek zero chance for the first goal. Eighteen year old rookie Sean Steur pressed into action when Nico Gonzalez forced off with concussion early on, Steur’s naive poorly executed pass gifting Leeds the killer second goal within two minutes of the opener. That was job done really in the space of two minutes and the eventual 4-1 scoreline you couldn’t argue with. This did though me reflect on what happened only eight months earlier when these two sides last met…
The Newcastle United team v Leeds United that started in the 4-3 St James’ Park win on 7 January 2026:
Nick Pope
Lewis Miley
Fabian Schar
Malick Thiaw
Lewis Hall
Sandro Tonali
Joelinton
Bruno Guimaraes
Anthony Gordon
Harvey Barnes
Nick Woltemade
The Newcastle United team last night compared to the one in January was unrecognisable, quite literally! Only one of the six forwards and midfielders who started in January against Leeds, also started on Monday night. Apart from Harvey Barnes, the only others who started both of these Leeds matches are Lewis Miley, Malick Thiaw and Lewis Hall.
Not forgetting of course that all of those who were on the sidelines, in the dugout, have also changed compared to eight months ago. This is a huge transformation that has and is taking place at Newcastle United and it is very much a work in progress, a work in progress not helped by the fact that Matthias Jaissle is now having to cope with seven players unavailable through injury and a summer transfer window where so many key players left. With then five new signings aged 20 or younger, a 21-year-old Matias Fernandez-Pardo and three 24-year-olds recruited. Only one of the nine new signings having ever played previously in the Premier League. Leeds 4 Newcastle 1 – Tuesday 14 September 2026 8pm
