The firm which provided the listeria contaminated sandwiches suspected of killing three hospital patients also supplied schools across the country, raising fears pupils may have been exposed to the infection.

Six people were diagnosed with a serious listeria infection between April 25 and May 15, in one of the worst cases of food poisoning in the health service, with two since dying at Manchester Royal Infirmary and one at Aintree Hospital in Liverpool.

Those who died had been given sandwiches supplied by The Good Food Chain using meat from Salford-based North Country Cooked Meats, which subsequently produced a positive test result for the strain of listeria involved in the outbreak.
