In Wednesday’s 2026 NFL season opener, the Patriots held a lead for most of the night, appearing on their way to redeeming some of the Super Bowl woes.

When Sam Darnold went down with an injury after just one drive for Seattle, the vibes were low on banner night for the fans at Lumen Field — but the reigning champs came alive in the third quarter. Once again, the Seahawks left Maye, Mike Vrabel and the Patriots stunned, picking off three of the young quarterback’s passes and scoring 13 unanswered points to claim a 13-10 win to open the new campaign. While offense was hard to come by for both sides in the Super Bowl rematch, the Patriots took advantage of Seahawks’ penalties to squeak by with a 10-0 lead by the mid-way point of the third quarter. Drew Lock was struggling to keep Seattle’s offense moving after being immediately thrust into the QB1 spot. But interceptions from Nehemiah Pritchett and Julian Love — plus a catch-and-run touchdown from the reigning Offensive Player of the Year, Jaxon Smith-Njigba — helped rejuvenate Seattle.

With time ticking down in the fourth quarter, Maye made one of the costliest mistakes of his career, throwing a toe-tap pick to Josh Jobe in the end zone when New England was potentially one play from forcing overtime. Yet again, Seattle proved on Wednesday that it will continually find a way to win, even if it’s not all pretty. Without Darnold, the Seahawks’ dynamic defense stepped up. New England, which is also dealing with an A.J. Brown injury, will now look to bounce back from a tough loss to swallow to open 2026. Final: Seahawks 13, Patriots 0 11:28 p.m. — It wasn’t a pretty season-opener, but Lock came in and got the job done for Seattle in a 13-10 win. But Maye’s interceptions were the difference, with Jobe being the hero after the Seahawks trailed for most of the night.

He picks off Maye’s pass into the end zone on third down, essentially ending this game when the Patriots could have forced overtime with a field goal. It’s a disastrous play for Maye, while Jobe just sealed Seattle’s first win of the season despite Darnold missing all but one drive. — The biggest moment of the night has arrived: the Patriots have a 4th & 9 at the two-minute warning, needing three points to tie or six to take the lead. 11:08 p.m. —  It should be a close finish in Seattle for Game No. 1. Maye picks up the conversion on 4th & 2 himself, barely sneaking in to move the chains. New England is inching down the field.

After the Love interception, the Seahawks got down to the eight-yard line, but couldn’t cap the drive before Jason Myers hit his field goal. Seattle leads with time ticking away.

With how the Seahawks’ defense has been playing, Stevenson’s been the only reliable player for Mike Vrabel’s offense.

Patriots 10, Seahawks 3 10:27 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Seattle settles for three, unable to get back in the end zone after the nullified Kupp score. For now, that will do, as it finally puts the Seahawks on the board with the third quarter winding down.

10:26 p.m. — Kupp followed it up with a wide-open touchdown … until it was called back for an illegal shift, yet another big penalty for Seattle. 10:24 p.m. — Cooper Kupp has been silent all night, until now. The former Super Bowl MVP makes a spectacular, one-handed grab for 24 yards, putting the Seahawks on the verge of points for the first time tonight.

— NFL (@NFL) September 10, 2026 10:18 p.m. — If anything is bringing some life to Lumen Stadium, it’s the Seahawks’ defense. They pin the Patriots in their own end zone on a punt, resulting in some solid field position for Lock as he looks to pull within a score. 10:13 p.m. — Lock is now 8-for-11 with just 68 yards passing. The Patriots’ secondary hasn’t allowed much wiggle room tonight, leading to another Seahawks punt.

10:09 p.m. — Brown is limping back to the locker room, not a good sight for the Patriots. He has been ruled questionable to return with an ankle injury. Patriots 10, Seahawks 0 10:04 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Andy Borregales connects from 50 yards out, extending the Patriots’ advantage despite the Brown injury. The penalty comes back to haunt Seattle again; they’ve committed seven for 83 yards already. 10:01 p.m.

— Roughing the kicker is the latest penalty to go against Seattle, keeping the Patriots’ offense on the field. Brown hasn’t returned to the game, however.

9:52 p.m. — Maye begins the second half with the ball and finds tight end Hunter Henry, who takes a big hit after picking up a first down. Halftime: Patriots 7, Seahawks 0  9:39 p.m. — Seattle can’t get on the board before halftime, and the Seahawks were shut out through two quarters after the Darnold injury.

On banner night, it’s been quiet in Seattle between a lack of offensive juice in this game and watching Darnold limp to the locker room. Still, this game is winnable, all in front of Drew Lock and the defending champions, while Maye has done just enough to keep the Patriots on top. 9:35 p.m. — Darnold has been ruled out by the Seahawks for the remainder of the game. 9:32 p.m. — Another catch for Brown and a 16-yard scramble from Maye had the Patriots moving back toward the end zone, but their drive stalls at midfield.

With under one minute remaining in the half, Seattle gets the ball.

The Seahawks punt. 9:17 p.m. — Right after a false start, Lock finds Smith-Njigba for 21 yards, making it a potential 3rd & 22 conversion for Seattle if they can pick up the first down. — NFL (@NFL) September 10, 2026 9:13 p.m. — Gabe Jacas picks up the Patriots’ second sack of the night.

Lock hasn’t been able to get anything going. Patriots 7, Seahawks 0 9:07 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Eli Raridon catches the first touchdown pass of 2026.

Maye got the ball pitched back to him then went deep for A.J. Brown, but Josh Jobe made far too much contact. 9:05 p.m. — Now, it’s Brown who steps up, picking up five yards to move the chains again for the Patriots. Slowly, New England is moving toward field-goal range, looking to break this stalemate. 9:01 p.m. — DeMario Douglas moves the chains for New England on 3rd & 3.

Offense has been hard to come by, similar to February’s Super Bowl, with these defenses making plays. End of first quarter: Seahawks 0, Patriots 0 8:56 p.m. — Seattle has the ball at the end of the first frame, with Drew Lock still taking snaps. The first quarter of the season has been all defense, with Darnold’s health the main storyline. 8:51 p.m.

— Seattle’s defensive front remains ferocious as ever. Stevenson gets stuffed on 3rd & 1, forcing a Patriots punt and keeping this game scoreless as the end of the first quarter nears. 8:49 p.m. — A.J. — The Seahawks’ offense can’t do much without Darnold, giving the ball to Price on the ground twice. After an eight-yard catch from Smith-Njigba, Seattle punts.
