A favorite Apple mascot is hidden in the Liquid Glass demo.
Liquid Glass, which was introduced through Apple’s operating systems last year, ended up being a controversial feature. You hated it, or you liked it well enough–I’ve never met anyone who says they love it. Apple tried to make Liquid Glass more appealing by giving the user more control over its appearance, but that didn’t change anyone’s mind.
In iOS 27, Apple is taking a different approach towards promoting Liquid Glass by associating it with one of the most beloved characters in Apple lore. In iOS 27 or iPadOS 27 (currently in final release candidacy), you’ll find an Easter egg in Settings > Appearance> Liquid Glass. It’s not obvious, but the demo window to test the opacity is scrollable. And if you scroll all the way to the bottom, you’ll find a character from Apple’s past. (Spoiler below.)
The key to finding the easter egg is to continue scrolling beyond where it stops naturally. If you do so, a search bar appears, and as you continue scrolling, the word “Moof!” will automatically be typed, revealing Clarus the Dogcow, a longtime character of Apple operating systems. If you don’t know who Clarus is, it was created by Susan Kare, who created the Dogcow glyph for the Cairo font on the original Macintosh in 1984. Clarus is a sentimental mascot for the Macintosh team and Mac users.
There was a period of time when Clarus seemed to be put out to a doghouse in Apple’s pasture (did you see how I combined a dog/cow reference there?), but it’s been making surprise appearances. A year ago, Clarus made an appearance on the Apple Watch Hermès. Four years ago, Clarus surprised and delighted users of macOS Ventura when Apple decided to put it in the Page Setup window. It’s fun to see Apple add a little whimsy to its software. Does it make us appreciate Liquid Glass a little more? That remains to be seen.
