In each of the past six years, contestants from the Philippines have won at least one “big four” beauty pageant, giving the nation the world’s longest winning streak for the annual international competitions.
Many pageant winners attribute their success to beauty “boot camps” that have evolved in the country over the past three decades.
Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray and 2015 winner Pia Wurtzbach both trained at such studios, and in turn, inspired hundreds of thousands of hopefuls to start their own quests for a crown.
But others worry about the dark side of the Philippine obsession with beauty queens and pageants.
