Clashes erupted between the riot police and protesters in Hong Kong last night after hundreds of thousands of people rallied to demonstrate against a proposed extradition law that they fear would allow China to seize political opponents in the territory and further undermine its independence.
The organisers put the turnout at 1.3 million people, which would make it the largest political protest since the territory was handed back by Britain in 1997 under an agreement that was meant to protect democratic freedoms. The police said that no more than 240,000 people took part.
Many of the marchers wore white and some carried yellow umbrellas, which have become a symbol of resistance to increased Chinese power over Hong Kong.
