Google Just Made This Premium Gemini Feature Free For Everyone

Google is opening up yet another of its best paid Gemini features to people who don’t want to pay for an AI subscription. Google revealed Daily Brief back in May, during its annual I/O developer conference. The feature is meant to pull together information from your emails, upcoming events in your calendar, as well as content from your Gemini chats, and then deliver it directly to your device. This is meant to let you stay up-to-date with whatever you have going on in your life.

While it originally deployed as a part of Gemini’s AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra subscriptions, Google is now rolling it out to free users in the U.S. Considering Google just killed off Google Assistant completely earlier this month, it makes sense it would push out Daily Brief to everyone as soon as possible afterwards, especially since Gemini is meant to replace Assistant overall.

If your mornings usually involve digging through your Gmail and checking your calendar, then Daily Brief might be worth checking out. It’s also far from the first premium feature that the company has released to free Gemini users. The company previously made Gemini Live’s camera and screen sharing free on Android, giving users another reason to try the chatbot without committing to a monthly bill.

If you want to try out Daily Brief, then you’ll need to connect your Google Workspace to the Gemini app and then enable Memory in Gemini’s Personal Intelligence settings. This lets Google pull context from your Gmail and other workspace functions. You’ll also need to turn on Google’s “Smart features in other Google products” setting. Another important note is that Daily Brief is only available to adults using personal Google accounts. Work and school accounts aren’t supported.

Once everything is configured, you’ll find your Daily Brief in Gemini’s sidebar. By default, Google splits the brief into a few different sections, including one that focuses on the items most likely to need your attention sooner, while the others break down suggestions for your longer-term goals. Where Daily Brief differentiates itself from a simple to-do list is that you can click on and chat about any of the noted tasks in your brief to learn more.

You can also check where the item came from, so you can determine whether or not you actually want to pay attention to it. If you do use Daily Brief and find tasks that you want to pay attention to, then you can immediately open emails, draft replies to those emails, and even schedule events or reminders directly from the Daily Brief itself.

There is a slight caveat to all the convenience that Daily Brief offers, though, and that’s the fact that Gemini needs access to your personal information to build a useful list of tasks. Its ability to remember past conversations is part of what makes Daily Brief such a potentially powerful option, so if you’ve turned off Memory in Gemini in the past — perhaps as a bid to make your Google account more private and not feed your personal data to it — then you will need to re-enable it before you can even use Daily Brief.

Google notes that information connected to Gemini can be used to help train its generative AI models. Some of the information can also be reviewed by humans, including summaries, excerpts, and inferences from relevant emails and files. Because of this, you should avoid connecting apps that might contain confidential information you don’t want used to train AI or potentially being viewed by a human reviewer.

If you try Daily Brief and don’t find it useful, you can always disable it through the Personal Intelligence settings. However, getting Gemini to actually stop using the information it has already remembered will take a few more steps. Google says you will need to delete the chats containing that information and make sure you have disconnected any app that you don’t want information being pulled. Otherwise, the information could remain available for an undisclosed amount of time.
