The New York Giants found themselves in a pickle after franchise quarterback Jaxson Dart was injured in the team’s Week 2 game against the Dallas Cowboys. Some may think the McCarthy trade to the Giants makes sense.
There’s a bit of a Harbaugh connection, since Giants head coach John Harbaugh’s brother coached McCarthy at the University of Michigan. But that may be the end of what makes sense with this deal. In a piece out on Tuesday, Jordan Dajani of CBS Sports throws real shade at Harbaugh and the Giants for this move. He even says that it “makes no sense.”
CBS Sports questions whether J.J. McCarthy is an upgrade for the Giants In the piece, Dajani flat-out says that “McCarthy hasn’t been good.”
“I don’t have to prove that McCarthy has struggled through his first three NFL seasons,” he says in the feature.
“He famously lost the Vikings quarterback battle to Kyler Murray this offseason, and was demoted to QB3 behind Carson Wentz.”
Dajani offers up this fun fact that McCarthy “became the only first-round pick at quarterback since 1970 to finish last in completion percentage and TD-INT ratio in their debut season.”
Frankly, seeing that McCarthy was behind Wentz on the depth chart, it isn’t surprising that the Vikings were looking to trade him away. “Is he even an upgrade over (Jameis) Winston?” Dajani asks.
“That’s definitely not a given.”
This is McCarthy’s third season in the NFL. His first season, he was injured for most of it, and his second season, his performance led to the Vikings signing free agent Kyler Murray. That says something. One has to wonder if this is really a good move for New York in the short or long term.
