The Philadelphia Eagles are 1-0 after narrowly beating the Washington Commanders at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday!
Final score: 24 to 22. The Eagles needed to stop a two-point conversion late in the game to prevent the Commanders from potentially sending this to overtime.
Vic Fangio’s defense, which was not perfect but did a lot of positive things today, came through when it counted most. Sean Mannion’s debut was … interesting. The Eagles’ offense was not exactly even. There were explosive plays, in large part led by Jalen Hurts looking good. The quarterback finished the game with the following numbers: 14/25, 203 passing yards (8.1 average), 3 TD, 0 INT, 122.2 passer rating. It felt like the Eagles’ quarterback carried the offense more than the offense functioned smoothly as a unit.
That was in part because the offensive line wasn’t great; concerns with Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens linger. The Eagles won the coin toss and elected to defer to put the Commanders up on offense first. Washington began at their own 36-yard line and immediately picked up a first down on the ground.
Facing 3rd-and-10 on the next set of downs, Jayden Daniels hit Stefon Diggs in a soft spot in the defense beyond the sticks with Cooper DeJean getting beat (and penalized but the flag was declined). The Commanders tried a flea flicker that resulted in a Daniels throwaway thanks to Moro Ojomo generating quick pressure up the middle. Facing 3rd-and-10 again, the Commanders went with … a coward’s draw. Is Nick Sirianni coaching Washington now? I kid. But nice of the Commanders to give up and settle for a 55-yard field goal make. EAGLES 0, COMMANDERS 3.
The Eagles began at their own 35-yard line. A play-action under-center look from the jump resulted in Hurts throwing incomplete short to Saquon Barkley. An under-center Barkley run brought the Eagles to third down. Facing 3rd-and-5, Hurts stepped up against a blitz (nice pickup by Barkley) and ran for a first down. Makai Lemon logged his first career reception to bring up third down. Facing 3rd-and-8 from the shotgun, Hurts hit Dontayvion Wicks short of the sticks and old friend Rasul Douglas instantly knocked the ball out for an incompletion (hospital ball). Six plays, 13 yards, punt.
Braden Mann pinned the Commanders back to their own 6-yard line with a nice coffin corner punt. Marcus Epps sniffed out a Washington run to fly into the backfield for a TFL. Facing 3rd-and-10 after a Diggs drop, Daniels overthrew a deep target while Riq Woolen had tight coverage anyway. Punt. The Eagles took over at their own 39-yard line. Cam Jurgens got called for holding.
The Eagles went with a backwards pass screen to Makai Lemon, who got blown up with Wicks missing his block. Two targets for Lemon, zero for DeVonta Smith … OK, then! Hurts connected with DeVonta on the next play to set up third down. Facing 3rd-and-12, Landon Dickerson just watched Frankie Luvu go by him to sack Hurts.
Yikes. The Commanders took over at their own 22-yard line after a 64-yard Mann punt.
Facing 3rd-and-1, Jalen Carter and Zack Baun combined to stuff Rachaad White for no gain. Good stop to force another three-and-out. The Eagles took over at their own 24-yard line.
A Barkley run to the outside picked up six yards (should’ve been more if Barkley didn’t run into DeVonta!) and then Hurts aired it out deep to Wicks for a 64-yard gain! Boom. Longest catch of Wicks’ career (previous high was just 36 yards!).
The Eagles then had to take a timeout as the play clock was winding down to zero and Hurts didn’t look very happy, seemingly signaling that he wanted the play call in sooner. Jurgens got hit with another holding penalty to knock the offense back and then Barkley got tackled for a loss to continue to move the offense back in the wrong direction to end the first quarter. SECOND QUARTER
Facing 2nd-and-goal from the 18-yard line, the Eagles ran the ball. Too conservative!
Facing 3rd-and-goal, Hurts found Dallas Goedert up the seam in the end zone for a touchdown! Great tight window throw by QB1. Good to see the aggression there!
EAGLES 7, COMMANDERS 3. The Commanders took over at their own 32-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-9 after Riq Woolen almost came away with an interception, the Eagles’ pass rush forced Daniels to scramble for an incompletion. Pretty strong start by Vic Fangio’s defense. The Eagles took over at their own 27-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-6 after Hurts got lit up while throwing incomplete to Lemon (Barkley picked up the wrong defender in pass pro), Hurts threw incomplete to Wicks. Rasul Douglas was pretty grabby on that play … but no flag was thrown.
The Commanders took over at their own 16-yard line after a 62-yard punt by Mann (he’s really booting it). Also, credit to my guy Darius Cooper, who logged his third special teams tackle of the day. A blitzing Cooper DeJean drew an offensive holding penalty to knock Washington back.
Zack Baun broke up a Daniels pass over the middle. Then Baun blew up a screen play. He’s a beast.
Facing 3rd-and-27, the Commanders went coward’s draw to bring up a punt. The Eagles took over at their own 38-yard line. The Eagles went with another backwards pass (not a fan of these, so risky!) that brought up a short third down. Facing 3rd-and-2, Barkley ripped off a 42-yard run through the Commanders’ defense.
Two plays later, Hurts threw a fadeaway with pressure bearing down on him to Wicks (who cooked Mike Sainristil again) in the end zone for another touchdown! Hurts looking good.
Wicks trade looking good. The broadcast showing Sean Mannion pumped up in the booth. You love to see it. EAGLES 14, COMMANDERS 3. The Commanders took over at their own 33-yard line and drove just shy of midfield.
Facing 3rd-and-15, Daniels took off running out of bounds a little short of the marker. Facing 4th-and-2, the Commanders moved the chains on the ground. Facing 3rd-and-1 in the high red zone, the Commanders went with another run for a first down conversion. Daniels hit Antonio Williams just shy of the end zone to set up goal-to-go.
The Commanders punched it into the end zone with a short Jacory Croskey-Merritt run. Jalen Carter blocked the extra point to at least salvage that much. 12 plays, 67 yards, TD.
EAGLES 14, COMMANDERS 9. The Eagles took over at their own 29-yard line with 1:48 on the clock and two timeouts on the clock. Last year, Nick Sirianni was insanely conservative in this kind of situation. Facing 3rd-and-2 after the Eagles picked up one first down, Hurts’ third down pass was knocked down at the line of scrimmage.
Facing 4th-and-2 from the minus 47, Sirianni opted to punt. I would’ve liked a go for it there but I don’t think it was egregious to punt. Mann’s punt pinned the Commanders back to their own 2-yard line. Beauty.
He’s the Mann. The Commanders took over with 0:33 on the clock. Dan Quinn called a timeout before Washington even ran a play. The Commanders then went with a run but the Eagles did not opt to use their remaining two timeouts. Would’ve liked to see Sirianni make the Commanders run another two plays. What if they fumble?
THIRD QUARTER
The Eagles began the second half at their own 26-yard line. A run to Barkley went for a loss, a designed touch for Lemon went for a loss, and then Hurts hit Goedert short of the sticks and the tight end was unable to break his defender’s tackle to get beyond the marker. The Commanders took over at their own 41-yard line after a 19-yard punt return. Facing 3rd-and-6, Baun made a tackle after a short Commies reception to bring up fourth down. Facing 4th-and-4 from their own 47-yard line, Dan Quinn opted to punt instead of being aggressive. And Tress Way’s punt bounced into the end zone for a net of just 33 yards.
The Eagles took over at their own 20-yard line. A blitzing Sonny Styles bulldozed Barkley on the way to sacking Hurts. Facing 3rd-and-6, Hurts left a clean pocket to the left and threw incomplete to DeVonta along the sideline. Another three-and-out.
The Commanders took over at their own 44-yard line. They moved into Eagles territory with a Daniels completion to Chig Okonkwo over the middle. DeJean got flagged for illegal contact (despite the fact that Diggs initiated it!) to give the Commanders another first down. Bad call.
Facing 3rd-and-8 after a Washington drop, Daniels threw to Dyami Brown but the receiver slipped while facing tight coverage (and grabby coverage) from Woolen. The Commanders attempted a 54-yard field goal that went way wide right! Nice break. Needing to produce some points, the Eagles took over at their own 44-yard line. Two straight Barkley runs resulted in a total of zero yards. Facing 3rd-and-10, Hurts was sacked. Dontayvion Wicks was straight up tackled by Rasul Douglas in coverage … no flag.
The Commanders took over at their own 11-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-5, a false start pushed Washington back. Facing 3rd-and-10, Daniels’ checkdown brought up a punt. The Eagles took over at their own 40-yard line. Landon Dickerson immediately got hit with a holding penalty to knock the offense back.
Hurts avoided a sack in the pocket and took off running. He ran again for a short gain to bring up third down. Facing 3rd-and-5, Hurts aired it out deep to DeVonta along the right sideline. The Eagles’ top receiver made a great toe-tapping catch. Great throw, great grab for another explosive.
Facing 3rd-and-4, Hurts did not appear to be on the same page with Goedert (and/or Lemon, who was just standing still?) for an incompletion. Sirianni brought in Jake Elliott for a 35-yard field goal make. Would’ve been really nice to get a touchdown but good to finally get some points, at least. EAGLES 17, COMMANDERS 9. The Commanders took over at their own 33-yard line. Daniels made, like, five Eagles defenders miss while running for a first down to end the third quarter. FOURTH QUARTER
Facing 3rd-and-9 after Daniels broke out of a Ojomo sack to ultimately get taken down by Jihaad Campbell behind the line of scrimmage instead, the Commanders had a false start.
Facing 3rd-and-14, Daniels had a clean pocket and hit Antonio Williams with Campbell trailing after not sticking with his man. Bad loss in coverage. Facing 3rd-and-6, Daniels hit Diggs over the middle with DeJean trailing for the touchdown. DeJean got shook to allow the veteran receiver to get open inside. Too easy. The Eagles were fortunate that Diggs’ unsportsmanlike conduct penalty by jumping on the goal post forced the Commanders to settle for an extra point instead of feasibly going for a game-tying two-point conversion.
EAGLES 17, COMMANDERS 16. The Eagles took over at their own 26-yard line. They picked up a first down with two straight Barkley runs. Facing 3rd-and-18 after getting knocked back in part by a Jordan Mailata false start, Hurts dropped back to throw but took off running up the gut (good block by Lemon!) for a big-time first down into Commanders territory. The Eagles caught the Commanders’ defense out of sync with Goedert motioning and Hurts hit the tight end for a 43-yard catch-and-run touchdown! Would’ve like Sirianni to go for the two-point conversion to make it a two-possession game … but he didn’t. The Commanders took over at their own 37-yard line with 5:56 left in the game.
Washington quickly moved into the red zone. Carter forced a fumble with a Bioreports but the Commanders got lucky to fall on the ball to retain possession. Facing 3rd-and-2, Baun tipped a Daniels pass to prevent a touchdown. Huge breakup.
Facing 4th-and-2, the Commanders kept their offense on the field … and took a timeout to talk it over. The Commanders schemed Terry McLaurin open on a short crossing route to secure first-and-goal at the 4-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-goal after Nolan Smith contributed to a Daniels throwaway, Daniels hit a wide open Williams for a touchdown.
Nice job by the Commanders to scheme a receiver open once again. The Commanders went for a two-point conversion to tie the game … and Moro Ojomo did a great job of sniffing out the shovel pass to stop Washington! HUGE. The Commanders went to line up for an onside kick and the Eagles took a timeout to get a look at their kick formation. The Commanders tried the onside and the ball took a lot of bounces on the way to ultimately being secured by DeVonta for the win!
Phew. Victory formation to close it out.

Marcus Epps (shoulder) got banged up on the Commanders’ second drive. Michael Carter II came in to play safety.
Epps was ruled questionable to return. Epps returned to the game in the second quarter.
Cooper DeJean seemed to be less than 100%. Jeff McLane noted that DeJean “came up slow and was wincing” after a reception at one point. A.J. Epenesa visited the medical tent in the second quarter.
He was spotted getting his left arm wrapped. Tyler Steen was slow to get up late in the second quarter but remained in the game. All of your communities in one place.
