Dead Marvel Characters Won't Get an MCU Reboot Anytime Soon

Dead characters aren’t simply going to be rebooted in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the wake of Avengers: Endgame, according to co-writer Christopher Markus. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing largely depends on one’s personal view. However, Markus has some pretty inarguable logic to back this up.

Warning: spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame. There have been more than a few casualties on the road to stop Thanos. Vision, Black Widow and, perhaps most significantly of all, Tony Stark. They’re all dead now, despite the fact that the heroes did manage to reverse Thanos’ deadly finger snap and take the Mad Titan out for good. This, as it turns out, will have long-standing consequences in the larger MCU as these characters can’t simply be rebooted. Here’s what Christopher Markus had to say about it in a recent spoiler-heavy conversation about the movie.

“It’s the nature of the MCU. It’s not a place where you can reboot one and suddenly Iron Man is 15 years old and everyone else is still the same age. The characters have to pass out, and the universe has to still stand. So if you’re going to take people off the board, they’ve got to go for real. Granted, these are movies. I understand that somebody has made some kind of announcement that has the word ‘Vision’ in it, so I mean…”

Indeed, a TV series titled WandaVision is in the works for the Disney+ streaming service and Vision is very much dead. However, Elizabeth Olson recently revealed the show will be taking place in the 1950s. How exactly that’s going to be possible remains to be seen, but it would keep intact the notion that, in the MCU present, Vision is dead.

The very idea of having such an interconnected universe of movies hadn’t really been explored in this way before the MCU kicked off with Iron Man in 2008. It’s proved to be highly successful, with the 22 movies bringing in more than $22 billion at the global box office over the course of the last eleven years. But that does mean, as Christopher Markus points out, that the reset button can’t just be hit on a character like Tony Stark. That wouldn’t make sense in the larger universe. So Marvel can’t just pull a character reboot, as Sony did with The Amazing Spider-Man in 2014, in order to keep an individual franchise going.

There are ways for these characters to come back though. A Black Widow movie is currently in the works that will be a prequel set before the events of Infinity War. There are also different versions of the characters that Marvel can utilize. Sam Wilson/Falcon was given Captain America’s shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame, effectively making him the new Captain America, for example. There are alternate versions of Iron Man from the comics and other spins on many of the MCU’s biggest characters. While it’s going to be hard to move on, that’s part of the deal with a shared universe. This news was first reported by Empire.
