The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, was tabled in the Lok Sabha on Monday, July 27. The development comes after Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned over the weekend amid the NEET paper leak controversy, marking a major victory for the nationwide student protests led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The bill proposes fast-track courts in every state, completion of paper leak investigations within two months and tougher penalties, including jail terms of up to 10 years and fines of up to ₹10 crore for organised crimes. The CJP, which suspended its nationwide agitation following assurances from the Centre, has meanwhile expressed concern over reports of students and protesters being detained or arrested in Assam, West Bengal and Bihar.
It reminded the government of its commitment to provide a written guarantee protecting protesters by Tuesday, July 28. “Any departure from that assurance would not merely amount to a breach of trust with the Cockroach Janta Party but would also be a breach of public trust with lakhs of young Indians who chose dialogue over protests,” a CJP spokesperson said, warning that such a breach would be “completely unacceptable to the youth”.
