I really waffled with who to put here. Most of the teams people would consider — Texas Tech, USC, BYU, etc. — all leave a little to be desired.
I’m gonna credit Louisville for taking Ole Miss to triple zeroes and then winning a great game over a good SMU team. Shockingly — I say in jest — the Cardinals’ offense is again potent. I think this will ultimately be the team that faces Miami for the ACC title. LW: 7

It’s hard to knock LSU down too far because of losing a road conference game in that environment, especially after a great second-half comeback. Of more pressing concern are the injuries suffered, most notably to TE Tre Green. Two desperate teams in Baton Rouge next week with the loser falling to 0-2 in SEC play when Texas A&M comes calling. What a weird two weeks.
Last week, the defense carried the Tide in a second-half comeback vs. Kentucky. This week, the D could barely get a stop, but the offense ripped through the Florida State defense, piling up 567 yards and scoring on its final nine drives, including a stretch of five straight touchdowns. Bama gets another poor defense this week in South Carolina. LW: 6

Brady Quinn and I both hinted at that game as being a close, ugly type of win and it was.
However, sometimes you find out a bit more about your team when it faces a little adversity. Michigan State isn’t the greatest offensive side out there, but the Irish defense made life miserable for QB Alessio Milivojevic. A trip to Purdue — which looks to have plenty of issues on defense — could get this Irish offense going in a big way.

Bounced back as expected against one of the MAC bottom-feeders. Not sure we’ll learn anything from this week’s game with Illinois, but at least it’s a conference opponent. LW: 2

Two conference road wins, but maybe some questions for the Canes to answer, especially on the interior of the offensive line. Miami is down a bunch of key parts in the secondary and making matters more complicated are the injuries suffered by RB Mark Fletcher and WR Malachi Toney at Wake Forest. Darian Mensah continues to play at a Heisman level and freshman JJ Dunnigan is going to be a star.

I don’t know if Ole Miss is better than Texas, Georgia, Miami, etc. But I do know nobody in the country has paired together two wins like the Rebels have against Louisville and LSU.
There isn’t a more valuable player in the sport than Trinidad Chambliss. There can’t be a letdown emotionally next week, as Ole Miss visits Florida, which looks much improved from a year ago. LW: 3

The Bulldogs haven’t beaten anyone, but they sure do look like the most impressive team so far. Dominance on both sides of the ball, which, even against the teams they’ve been facing, is impressive. They’ve got Oklahoma in Athens next, and I’m not sure the OU offense is going to have an enjoyable evening, but we should learn more about the offense. LW: 1

That was pretty much what I expected coming off the emotional win over Ohio State. Colin Simmons missed the second half and was in street clothes and a boot, so that’s something to monitor.
The Longhorns will need to be better at Tennessee to escape Neyland with a win, and they know that. I’m not sure Texas is the best team in the country, but the Longhorns have the best win, and at this point in the year, that has to count for a lot.
