Ukraine were full value for their 3-1 win over Scotland in Wednesday’s play-off semi-final at Hampden Park. Oleksandr Petrakov’s side cut Scotland’s defence to ribbons on Wednesday and would have won even more comfortably were it not for Craig Gordon’s heroics.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

  • WELL, HOW DOES £/€20 AFTER SIGNING UP SOUND?

Despite many of their squad not playing for several months, Ukraine played silky, crisp football throughout and will cause all sorts of problems for Wales on Sunday. It feels like a long time ago that Gareth Bale inspired Wales to a 2-1 win over Austria in March, which could be to their disadvantage on Sunday against a well-oiled side like Ukraine.

Sunday 5pm: Wales v Ukraine

World Cup Playoff final

TV: ITV, S4C, Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football

Ukraine to win

Wales lost out to Poland on Wednesday in what was an entirely inconsequential Nations League opener, with many of their star names given a rest ahead of Sunday. That could prove counter-productive, however, considering Ukraine are already in full flight ahead of Sunday’s decider. Ukraine to Win kicks us off.

Both teams to score

Ukraine utterly dominated Wednesday’s game at Hampden Park, but they still gave Scotland a glimmer of hope through the concession of a comical goal with ten minutes remaining. Goalkeeper Heorhiy Bushchan seemed desperate to offer Scotland a route back into the semi-final, first presenting John McGinn with a golden opportunity midway through the second half before eventually conceding an incredibly soft goal to Callum McGregor.

Ukraine have kept just one clean sheet in their last 16 competitive games and are unlikely to make that two in 17 against a Wales side that has scored 13 goals in their last seven games. There should be goals on Sunday night so back Both Teams to Score.

Roman Yaremchuk to Score Anytime

Roman Yaremchuk has proved vital to Ukraine’s World Cup hopes so far, winning four points for his side during the group campaign with three crucial goals before putting them 2-0 up on Wednesday with a guided header.

Yaremchuk enjoyed a modest return of six goals in 13 league starts for Benfica this season, also notching three goals in six starts in the Champions League during Benfica’s run to the last-eight. He will provide a threat against Wales on Sunday and can fire Ukraine to their first World Cup appearance since 2006 with an Anytime Goal.

Gareth Bale to Score Anytime

Gareth Bale finally cut ties with Real Madrid earlier in the week and can now fully focus on the football he appears to enjoy. Bale has long been phoning it in at club level, but his international form has never dipped.

His two goals saw Wales overcome Austria in their play-off semi-final in March and his goalscoring touch will be vital again on Sunday if Wales are to book their place in their first World Cup since 1958. Bale has scored 27 of his 38 international goals in qualifying games, so the stage is set for him to find the back of the net again Anytime on Sunday.

irish-tricolour-makes-out-of-the-blue-appearance-at-queen’s-jubilee-concert-in-big-mistake-–-irish-mirror

The Irish tricolour made an out of the blue appearance at Saturday night’s Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace – as it emerged that the Queen is more popular than our own politicians.

Social media users went online to take a swipe at the organisers of the prestigious event, when the Irish flag was mistakenly shown in representation of Northern Ireland during a segment by actor and Comedian Doc Brown as he performed a spoken word poem celebrating UK sport.

Images were shown on the large screen behind him including the England and Wales football badge, as well as the Scottish flag and then the Irish tricolour.

As Brown referred to the “three lions” he said “Same with the red dragon, shamrock and thistle. Sport is the leveler, now to the finish, son of an immigrant proud to be British.

The images projected behind him of the Irish flag then caused confusion amongst viewers.

Several social media users took to Twitter to highlight their confusion at the blunder.

One poster wrote: “Ummmm…did they just show the Irish flat in this segment?”

While another said “Irish flag is approved by Liz”.

Another poster wrote: “The Irish flag is not British. We had a war of independence for that”.

The mix up comes as the Queen scored a higher approval rate during her Platinum jubilee than any Irish politician.

In a poll over weekend, Queen Elizabeth scored 50 percent in popularity.

Behind her, came Sinn Fein Leader Mary Lou McDonald who scored 45 percent, while the Taoiseach Micheal Martin ranked below both women at 44 percent.

Fine Gael’s Leo Varadkar only scored 38 percent in approval while Green Leader Eamon Ryan ranked a very low 21 percent.

three-dead-and-11-injured-after-mass-shooting-in-philadelphia-–-independent.ie

Three people died and a further 11 were injured in Philadelphia late on Saturday night after gunfire erupted in one of the city’s most popular entertainment districts.

olice officers were patrolling the area on South Street when they heard multiple gunshots and witnessed several suspects firing into a large crowd just before midnight, Police Inspector D. F. Pace said during a news conference.

An officer shot at one of the suspects from about 30ft away but it is unclear if the suspect was hit, Mr Pace said.

“You can imagine there were hundreds of individuals just enjoying South Street, as they do every single weekend, when this shooting broke out,” he said.

The names of the deceased victims have not yet been made public by the authorities.

Meanwhile, the conditions of those who were wounded by gunfire remains unknown.

Two handguns were recovered, including one with an extended magazine, police said. No arrests have been made.

Two men and one woman received fatal wounds which they later died from while being treated at a nearby hospital, while 11 more people were injured.

The incident happened at one of Philadelphia’s most popular entertainment districts.

Mr Pace said police were asking business owners to review video from surveillance cameras.

South Street is known for its entertainment venues and night life with multiple bars, restaurants and businesses.

Last Thursday, US President Joe Biden delivered an impassioned plea to Congress to act on gun control.

“Enough, enough,” he said as he addressed the nation and implored politicians to take action against gun violence.

george-and-charlotte’s-sweet-reaction-to-queen-pulling-sandwich-from-her-handbag-–-irish-mirror

Prince George and Princess Charlotte were spotted laughing at the Queen’s admission that she keeps an emergency stash of marmalade sandwiches in her handbag.

The royal siblings were clearly delighted at the revelation, which the Monarch made during a surprise comic appearance with Paddington Bear.

The monarch and the famous bear met for a chaotic cream tea at Buckingham Palace in a special, secretly-pre-recorded sequence played at the start of the televised BBC’s Platinum Party at the Palace.

The duffle-coat wearing bear told the Queen how he ensured he always had his favourite treat on him just in case, lifting up his red hat to reveal his snack.

The Queen responded by saying: “So do I,” before opening her bag and declaring: “I keep mine in here”, before showing her very own ready-made supply of the bread and orange preserve staple, adding: “For later.”

Paddington caused raised eyebrows from a Palace footman by gulping down his tea from the spout of the teapot, and leaving none left for the amused Queen, who declared: “Never mind.”

The accident-prone bear was shown causing mayhem by accidentally spraying a splodge of cream from a chocolate eclair onto the footman’s face.

The bear, from deepest darkest Peru, congratulated the Queen on her reign of 70 years, saying: “Happy Jubilee Ma’am. And thank you. For everything.”

The modest Queen replied: “That’s very kind.”

The unlikely duo then tapped out the beat of the We Will Rock You anthem together on china teacups using silver spoons as a unique way of getting the concert under way.

With the two-and-a-half-minute film played at the start of the televised BBC’s Platinum Party at the Palace, the novel duet tapped out the rhythm for opening act Queen + Adam Lambert – who joined in on the

main stage.

It brought back memories of the Queen’s James Bond skit for the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, when the monarch met 007, played by Daniel Craig, and then appeared to parachute into the stadium, with the help of a body double.

Paddington and the Queen were pictured sat opposite each other in ornate chairs at a table, laid for afternoon tea, covered with a white linen cloth in an opulent room.

Buckingham Palace said the Queen felt the opportunity to invite Paddington to tea was “too fun to miss”.

The Palace said: “Her Majesty is well known for her sense of humour, so it should be no surprise that she decided to take part in tonight’s sketch.

“There was an interest in the filming and animation process and the opportunity to invite a famous bear to tea was just too much fun to miss.

“While The Queen may not be attending the concert in person, she was very keen that people understood how much it meant to her and that all those watching had a great time.”

The film was kept under wraps for several months by Buckingham Palace, BBC Studios and Heyday Films/StudioCanal. Actor Ben Whishaw voiced Paddington, just as he did in the hit movie versions of the children’s story.

Those involved in the film, which was actually shot at Windsor Castle, praised the Queen’s wit and warmth during the process, saying she shone and put them all at ease. Rosie Alison of Heyday Films said:

“Filming Her Majesty’s tea party with Paddington Bear was such an emotional day for the entire crew.

“All of us were in awe of the Queen’s wit, warmth and radiant aura as she patiently engaged with a polite, clumsy but very well-intentioned bear.

“Of course, she shone, and put Paddington (and all of us) at ease. Capturing this lovely encounter was an absolute joy and unique privilege for the whole team.”

Paddington, created by late British author Michael Bond, and the Queen share something in common – they both have two birthdays.

When Paddington was adopted by the Brown family, they agreed that bears, “just like the Queen”, have two birthdays every year.

The Queen’s actual birthday is on April 21, but she has an official one each year in June. Paddington’s birthdays are on June 25 and December 25.

He has visited the Queen before – with a costumed Paddington going to Buckingham Palace in 2006 for a children’s party filled with storybook characters as part of the monarch’s 80th birthday celebrations.

urc:-leinster-thrash-hapless-glasgow-warriors-to-reach-semi-finals-–-planetrugby.com

Leinster made a statement of intent as they produced a fine showing to beat Glasgow Warriors 76-14 in their United Rugby Championship quarter-final the RDS Arena in Dublin on Saturday.

As the scoreline suggests, this was a one-sided affair and Leinster outscored their hosts by 12 tries to two with Dan Sheehan and Jordan Larmour leading the way with two five-pointers each.

Their other tries were scored by Joe McCarthy, Caelan Doris, Michael Alaalatoa, Jamison Gibson-Park, Garry Ringrose, Ciaran Frawley, Luke McGrath and Jimmy O’Brien while Ross Byrne added 12 points courtesy of six conversions and his brother, Harry, also converted two tries.

For Glasgow Warriors, Zander Fagerson and George Horne crossed the whitewash and Ross Thompson added the extras on both occasions.

Click here for teams and scorers

Richie Gray’s sin-binning was punished with three tries, including McCarthy’s first for Leinster, as the Irish Shield winners galloped into a 26-7 half-time lead.

Sheehan bagged his brace during the opening period and the electric Larmour also crossed as Glasgow’s initial seven-point advantage – thanks to Fagerson’s fourth-minute effort – was ominously washed away.

Leinster’s 12 tries is a new URC record their points haul of 76 was also the highest for a single match in the competition’s history under its various guises, edging the 75 the Ospreys put past Benetton in Swansea in 2014.

The Warriors’ only consolation was replacement Horne’s converted score on the hour mark. Leinster march on to host the Bulls in next week’s semi-finals.

James Ryan coughed up a couple of early penalties, Glasgow turning down a simple place-kick before prop Fagerson powered over from close range with Thompson converting.

However, the hosts immediately profited from Gray’s yellow – his right arm caught Gibson-Park’s face at a ruck – and the resulting line-out drive saw Sheehan score.

Fly-half Ross Byrne converted and also added the extras to Larmour’s 16th-minute effort, the winger released for the line after Gibson-Park had regained possession from a batted-down pass.

Young lock McCarthy picked from a ruck to extend Leinster’s lead, the TMO review ruling out a knock-on. Byrne slotted the extras to make it 21-7.

Sam Johnson reignited the Glasgow attack with a rampaging run before Gregor Brown was denied a try when Larmour ripped the ball away.

A late attack delivered Sheehan’s second try, and Leinster needed just under three minutes of the second half to work Doris over for their fifth, converted by Byrne.

Glasgow full-back Ollie Smith went to the bin for a deliberate knock-on, with Ala’alatoa then burrowing over for Byrne to convert.

Larmour was twice released out wide, setting up back-to-back tries for Gibson-Park and Ringrose as the Blues passed the half-century mark.

Kiran McDonald offloaded for Horne to grab Glasgow’s second seven-pointer, but sharp hands from Robbie Henshaw and O’Brien made it a deserved double for Larmour.

Frawley, with an interception, and replacement McGrath rubbed salt into Glasgow wounds before O’Brien wrapped up a record-breaking day for the URC title favourites. Replacement Harry Byrne tagged on two conversions.

cork-woman-battling-eating-disorder-fears-she-will-die-if-she-cannot-access-inpatient-care-–-irish-examiner

NOTE: This article contains content that may be triggering to some people.

A young Cork woman who has been struggling with an eating disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) for a decade says she believes she will die if she cannot access inpatient care, as she does not feel safe in her own home and can no longer cope with supports offered by the HSE.

Emma O’Sullivan, 25, from Ballinlough, was first diagnosed with anorexia when she was 15 and was admitted to Eist Linn Hospital for treatment for six months the following year.

She says her treatment has been “severely mismanaged” since she was a teenager and that the current barriers to her accessing inpatient care through the public health system are putting her “life at risk” as she believes she urgently needs specialised care.

“I’ve decided to go public with my story to raise awareness of how difficult it is to get the right treatment in Ireland, and to start a fundraising campaign so I can access the care I need in St Patrick’s Hospital, which has a specific treatment programme for patients with eating disorders,” said Emma.

“St Patrick’s did accept a referral made by my old GP earlier in the year and I was waiting on a call from their beds manager, but then I found out that my health insurance provider would not cover the cost of care as it was for a ‘pre-existing condition’.

Seriously deteriorated

“My health has seriously deteriorated in the last few months and I’ve had to make numerous calls to my GP, visits to SouthDoc, and urgent trips to the CUH mental health emergency department amidst daily breakdowns and a number of near-suicide attempts,” she said.

“Despite all this I have been told that the HSE will not give me funding to access specialised care in hospital, as I have been told that the support currently offered to me is adequate, even though I have said that I am not coping repeatedly.

“I don’t know how much worse things would have to get for me before their position changes, or what the threshold is for getting serious help. That’s why I’m asking people to help me get the care I need now,” she said.

Emma said that since she left hospital at 16 she has largely depended on her own coping mechanisms to try and get her life “back on track”, but that things have become so unmanageable lately that she has had to give up her job and she struggles to leave the house.

“I started getting support from the HSE’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health services when I was 15,” she said.

“Each week they weighed me, and I was often told that I ‘just needed to eat’. It didn’t help.

“As I got worse my mum pushed for me to be admitted. She had to ask local TDs to get involved. When I got to the mental health unit the staff were shocked at my overall condition, and that my spine was bruised.

I had lost so much weight that I couldn’t really walk for three months. I had to get a lift to go up the stairs and I couldn’t sit down in a chair without cushions being placed behind my back.

“The treatment I got there saved my life, but after I left I felt like I was back to coping on my own,” said Emma.

Though Emma went on to finish her Leaving Certificate and attend design college after having to miss out on her Junior Certificate, she continued to struggle with her mental health.

Since the start of the pandemic, both her OCD and her eating disorder have “taken over” her day-to-day life.

“During lockdown I started to have health problems that saw my OCD get worse,” she said.

“I experience severe intrusive thoughts that lead to a process of self-checking, and extreme self-cleaning.

“I have told people in the system that this has gotten so bad that I’ve used chemical cleaner on my body as I am so afraid of contamination.

“My OCD and my eating disorder aren’t separate. I can’t prepare food at home because I can’t touch the cooking utensils,” she said.

“I’ve been in situations where I am hungry but unable to eat because I am afraid of contamination. I have noticed that I am losing quite a lot of weight again as a result. It is really upsetting to be dealing with all of this at home, and then having to tell a counsellor about it after the fact,” said Emma.

“I have told my GP, my psychiatrist, and my psychologist that I don’t feel safe at home anymore.

“On one occasion I went to the emergency department and was sent home after an hour-long assessment, with a new medication, which my psychiatrist then took me off.

“I’ve gone to the adult mental health crisis team and had a supervisor tell me that I ‘look fine’ because I put on makeup. Our system is really broken, and I don’t think I’m the only person in Cork, let alone the country, in this situation.”

The Ballinlough native said that it should not be the case that her health has to deteriorate further before she can access inpatient care.

“I don’t want to die because of this. I want my life back, my ability to work, to maintain relationships, and to have independence.

“I think that I am entitled to treatment. You shouldn’t have to be on the brink of death to get specialised care,” Emma said.

Aside from private facilities, the HSE has three dedicated psychiatric eating disorder beds for adults.

The HSE’s 2018 ‘Models of Care’ report on ED services said that patients are typically referred for inpatient treatment “when more intensive treatment and refeeding is needed”.

The same report stated that local Community Health Organisations do “occasionally” provide funding for patients to be admitted to private/independent eating disorder care providers in Ireland.

In March this year Minister of State Mary Butler announced ring-fenced funding for the development of eating-disorder supports.

To donate towards Emma’s GoFundMe campaign for treatment, visit her fundraiser page.

A spokesperson for Cork Kerry Community Healthcare told the Irish Examiner that they cannot comment on individual cases.

“Adults with eating disorders can access treatment from local community mental health teams. There are currently 112 adult community mental health teams nationwide. 90% of new/re-referred adults are offered an appointment within 12 weeks,” the spokesperson said.

“Adults who have an eating disorder diagnosis and require inpatient care can be referred to any of the HSE’s acute inpatient mental health approved centres around the country.

“Adults presenting with an eating disorder can also be treated in an acute hospital if their physical health needs require this. In exceptional circumstances on the advice of the treating team, external placements to specialised services have been approved,” the spokesperson added.

Cork Kerry Community Healthcare said that in a crisis situation service users should engage with their GP or go to the nearest emergency department.

They also said that service users can make complaints via the HSE website.

limerick-emerge-victorious-after-extra-time-in-munster-final-thriller-with-clare-–-the42

Limerick 1-29

Clare 0-29

(After extra-time)

A HURLING GAME of stunning emotions culminated with dominant Limerick on top again in Munster and Clare left drained after producing a ferocious challenge that saw them push the champions to the wire.

The success is a milestone for Limerick hurling, they collected a fourth Munster title on the spin, the first time since 1936 the county has achieved that. Clare’s wait for this provincial crown goes on, 1998 their most recent triumph, and an All-Ireland quarter-final against Kerry or Wexford awaits on Saturday 18 June.

A remarkable game was encapsulated by the drama at the end of normal time. Declan Hannon hoisted over a shot from distance for Limerick, the captain supplying a moment of inspiration that appeared to be the match-winner.

That was until a swarm of Clare players forced Barry Nash out over the sideline and from an angle that looked too narrow to convert, Tony Kelly still nailed his shot, the Ballyea maestro’s 11th point of the game proving the most valuable.

In extra-time, Limerick had more gas in the tank. Seamus Flanagan finished with 0-8 to his credit in a man-of-the-match showing, while Aaron Gillane’s influence grew and they ran out three-point victors.

Substitutes David Reidy and Conor Boylan landed important points for Limerick while their defence smothered Clare efforts to find the goal they craved. Mark Rodgers flashed a late shot over the bar when Clare were four down and that was the last scoring act of the day.

The tone was set early on for a first half packed with fierce challenges and bruising hits. It was fast and furious stuff, in keeping with the recent draw in Ennis as Clare again thundered into Limerick, intent on asking questions of the champions.

By the break they were level at 1-11 to 0-14, a position of equality on the scoreboard that had occurred seven times during the opening period. Limerick found a way past the Clare rearguard once, Tom Morrissey offloading to Gearoid Hegarty with his stickwork delightful as he moved forward, flicking over Diarmuid Ryan and catching on the other side before burying a shot past Eibhear Quilligan.

The Feakle man had stood up well earlier to produce a terrific point-blank stop as Seamus Flanagan went in search of a goal. It was a rare misstep by Flanagan in the opening period, Limerick’s best forward as he picked off four points in a classy display.

Clare had plenty to be heartened about. They reeled off the opening three points of the game and had gone clear by that margin again in the 24th minute. Hegarty’s goal was a setback but they still dragged themselves level at the break. Tony Kelly’s 0-7 haul, five from play, was as predictable as it was impressive. There were striking returns elsewhere, a trio of points from the superb Ryan Taylor and two from David Fitzgerald.

The theme of parity was maintained throughout the second half, eight further instances where the sides were level on the scoreboard. Both teams were denied goals by fine instances of defending, a Mike Casey block stopping Shane O’Donnell and a Conor Cleary hook preventing Gillane from unleashing a strike.

At different stages Limerick looked set to pull away, in front 1-17 to 0-18 in the 58th minute and 1-20 to 0-21 in the 67th minute. But Clare were resolute with Peter Duggan, who took over free-taking duties, nailing two shots to bring them level as the game moved into injury-time.

Then the action hit its peak in a wonderful finale as Hannon and Kelly traded points, a pulsating spectacle for the packed Thurles venue to witness. Limerick were capable of pushing clear in the additional period, reinforcing their status as the best team in the country.

Scorers for Limerick: Aaron Gillane 0-10 (0-7f), Seamus Flanagan 0-8, Gearoid Hegarty 1-0, Tom Morrissey 0-3, Cathal O’Neill 0-2, Diarmaid Byrnes 0-1 (0-1f), Declan Hannon 0-1, Darragh O’Donovan 0-1, Conor Boylan 0-1, David Reidy 0-1, William O’Donoghue 0-1

New research shows people who weren’t hospitalised with Covid-19 are just as likely to suffer from long-term effects of the virus.

A new study on Long Covid led by the Mater Hospital in Dublin, found 25 percent were still suffering from symptoms a year after being infected with the virus.

The data also shows one in five people were suffering from moderate or severe depression.

The Health Research Board-funded study examined the long-term effects the virus had on 155 people over 14 months.

Consultant in Infectious Diseases at the Mater Hospital and Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, Professor Jack Lambert, says multiple factors can lead to Long Covid.
