If you’re looking to build a home theater system, you’ve probably weighed the options between a giant TV and a projector. A projector makes the experience feel just like a movie theater, but you’ll also want to consider what the video is being projected onto. Deciding on what type of surface to use as for your projector comes down to a few aspects.
You’ll need to know where the projector is going, how large the room is, and how bright and dark the room can get. The easiest and most cost-effective method is just aiming the projector at a wall and watching that way, but it’s best if the wall is blank and without any indentations or curves. A sheet works, as well, but you’ll need a way to mount or frame it. The best overall option would be to use an actual theater screen as the projector screen. It’ll provide a brighter and smoother image and has less impact on the contrast and image quality. A theater screen may cost more than the others, but there are benefits to consider that may justify ditching your tv for a projector.

For the best movie theater experience, a projector screen is the way to go. Having a screen designed for projectors is critical to getting the most out of any projector. Projectors are built to reflect off of a surface and that surface is designed to reflect and absorb the projector’s image. Projector screens are purposefully made to ensure the projector’s image is reflected just right so you get a clear, crisp, and smooth image.
Theater-style projector screens come in a range of sizes and prices. The Mdbebbron 120-inch Projector Screen is around $23, while the Projector Screen with Stand from Visulapex is $149.99 as it has a stand; though it’s best to do your own research to determine what product is ideal for your needs. These products at these prices were available as of this time of writing.
There are even projectors that allow you to connect your smartphone to them to cast its screen. This allows you to browse any streaming app and play it on the projector. Many people are leaving behind owning a TV to switch to smart projectors. No matter which projector you have, choosing a theater projector screen to watch it on improves the experience ensuring you and anyone else watching can see the movie at its best from beginning to end.
The free options: walls and sheets

Not wanting to spend the money on a projector screen to replace your TV? Then you can either project the picture on a blank wall or hang a sheet on the wall. When using a bare wall as a projector screen, you will want to make sure the wall is smooth and doesn’t have any bumps, curves, or textures as they can reduce the image quality and overall picture. All you need to do is find a spot for the projector and aim it at the wall. Make sure it is high enough so the light doesn’t point at the backs of heads or furniture to cast shadows on the wall that will block the movie.
A sheet is a viable option for a projector screen, as well. You more than likely have one laying around the house. You’ll need to hang the sheet on a wall or prop it up so it’s smooth enough for the projector. This can be difficult as it may contain wrinkles, patterns, and catch light unevenly. If it isn’t just right, the picture quality won’t be all that great, therefore reducing what you may be able to see.
