5 Reasons To Buy The iPhone 18 Pro Instead Of An iPhone Duo
SHARE

During Apple’s “Surprise & Shine” event, the company introduced its new generation of iPhone 18 Pro models and an all-new iPhone Duo, Apple’s first foldable device. While the hype is real for the company’s new iPhone iteration in a never-before-seen format, some customers are concerned because the iPhone Duo doesn’t offer the best specs available on the Pro models. For example, while the company spent a long time in the keynote talking about the new Pro cameras, the iPhone Duo segment focused on the innovative design and new ways to interact with it. Still, if you’re thinking about upgrading from your current phone to one of these two devices, some reasons to choose the iPhone 18 Pro over the Duo include longer battery life, better camera features, and a more affordable price.

Even though the iPhone 18 Pro looks very similar to the iPhone 17 Pro, several tweaks could make the update worth it not only for those who upgraded their phones last year, but also for someone coming from an older model, adding features like the second generation of Photographic Styles, the vapor chamber thermal system, and other functions. While the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo take different approaches, both target Apple’s high-end market, so choosing the right one could save you a few hundred dollars while still giving you the best specs on the market.

More affordable iPhone

If you’re deciding whether to get the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone Duo, start with the price. The iPhone 18 Pro model starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299, both with 256GB of storage. The iPhone Duo, on the other hand, starts at $1,999 — with the same storage. For that price, customers could get the 1TB version of the smaller Pro for $1,799 or the 1TB version of the larger Pro for $1,899 and still save money.

While leasing the phone through Apple’s new Upgrade program could make it much more affordable, customers still need to pay at least $57.99/month for this new iPhone, even though the regular Pro starts at $34.99. Also, if you’re a content creator, record lots of videos, or have a huge library of downloaded content, 256GB might not be enough, and the total price of the iPhone Duo could surpass $3,000.

That said, even though iPhones are people’s main devices for streaming videos, scrolling social media, working, and more, Apple is now entering a very expensive market, which makes the company’s latest products much harder for users to buy. In addition to that, repairs for this phone could likely cost a lot, as an iPhone 17 Pro Max repair can be as expensive as $899, almost ¾ of the product’s price.

More camera features

If having the best camera setup matters most when you buy a new iPhone, the iPhone Duo might not be for you. MacRumors recently found that the lenses on the foldable phone are similar to those on the iPhone 17e. More than that, several visible and under-the-hood differences show how much better the iPhone 18 Pro lenses are than those on Apple’s most expensive phone.

For example, the iPhone Duo features a 12MP Center Stage front camera, while the iPhone 18 Pro features an 18MP sensor. As a result, the Pro phone can capture more data than the foldable. When comparing the main sensors, the iPhone 18 Pro not only has larger sensors, but its main camera also features a variable aperture and a 48MP telephoto lens, offering 8x optical zoom and up to 40x digital zoom. In addition to the new variable-aperture camera, Apple also added Pro controls, giving customers much more freedom when shooting with their iPhone.

Another key feature is the Apple Reference Image protocol, exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro models, which ensures image authenticity, meaning people can verify whether an image is real or was modified with AI, and by how much. The company says that this protocol is like a digital negative, and starting with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate, third-party apps will be able to view these reference images.

Longer battery life

While we need to wait for real-world battery tests, Apple claims the iPhone 18 Pro Max has the longest battery life of any iPhone, with up to 45 hours of video playback. The iPhone Duo, on the other hand, offers up to 44 hours with the outer (smaller) display, with battery life dropping to 31 hours when customers use the larger one. For streamed video playback, the iPhone 18 Pro Max lasts up to 40 hours, while the Duo lasts up to 37 hours.

In other words, if you always need your phone charged enough to help you tackle the day, then the iPhone 18 Pro Max remains king. Apple also improved the Pro phones’ fast-charging capabilities, as they can charge up to 50% in around 15 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter and a USB-C charging cable. For the iPhone Duo, under the same conditions, it can reach up to 50% in around 20 minutes.

If you forgot to charge your phone, or if it didn’t charge properly overnight with MagSafe, you can get half the battery in just 15 minutes, making this feature great for an emergency. Even though Apple no longer offers a power brick with the iPhone, several GaN chargers can do the job, or, if you prefer, Satechi recently released a charger hub that can deliver those charging speeds while still getting your MacBook and iPad to full capacity in no time.

Face ID support

Almost ten years ago, Apple introduced the iPhone X with Face ID support. At the time, the company said that this was the most reliable and secure way to conveniently unlock the iPhone. With a “state-of-the-art” TrueDepth camera system, this biometric authentication used a dot projector, infrared camera, and flood illuminator to analyze your face in a fraction of a second and unlock the phone. While Apple kept improving and expanding this technology across the iPhone lineup, the company went a step backward—or sideways—with the iPhone Duo, which features Touch ID.

While Touch ID remains a convenient, mainstream feature across several Apple products, it’s strange that Apple’s most expensive and innovative phone uses a technology it recently phased out of the iPhone lineup when it ditched the iPhone SE 3 in favor of the iPhone 16e.

It’s possible that a future iteration of the iPhone Duo could feature Face ID, as Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman even suggested that a future model could have a telephoto lens, but so far, if you want the most convenient and secure way to unlock your phone, then the iPhone 18 Pro is still a better option — and if you choose the iPhone Duo, Apple is letting Apple Watch users unlock the phone if the watch is nearby on their wrists. It’s a good workaround, but still not as good as Face ID.

More familiar experience

The iPhone Duo offers an all-new way to interact with the iPhone. It supports Apple Pencil, multitasking, and rotation, so you can use the iPhone in any direction you like. The phone has cameras all over it, and you can choose different angles to create unique experiences. While many customers see this as a perk, others see it as a barrier they don’t want to overcome. If you want the best, most reliable phone available, the iPhone 18 Pro models are the go-to choice. After all, they offer the same experience iPhone users have had for almost a decade, and even with the iOS 26 changes with Liquid Glass, everything still feels straightforward. With the iPhone Duo, there’s a new learning curve to understand how apps will behave side by side. A few experiences aren’t available, such as the aforementioned Face ID or the Action Button. Others have been added, such as Smart Capture for photos and different positions to use the phone.

Even though there’s no right or wrong when choosing a new gadget, the iPhone 18 Pro still feels more like a safer bet, as customers know exactly what they’re getting: how they interact with the phone, how the cameras work, and even what to expect from the durability of this device during the years to come. For the iPhone Duo, on the other hand, we’ll still have to discover all of that.
