Serie A sets attendance record

Week 1 of the 2019-20 Serie A season set a new League record in stadium attendance.

The opening round averaged 26,000 spectators – a new high since Serie A was increased to 20 teams in 2004-05.

The arrival of several big names and the campaign starting later than usual is thought to be behind the record.

The biggest attendance was seen at San Siro, where 64,188 turned up to watch Inter thrash Lecce 4-0.

In second place was the 38,779 at the Olimpico, where fans were treated to a 3-3 draw between Roma and Genoa.

The Artemio Franchi came in third as 33,614 witnessed Napoli edge out Fiorentina in a 4-3 thriller.

The last two opening rounds of Serie A had clocked up an average of just over 22,000.
