Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa recently sealed a move to Turkish League side Fatih Karagumruk after spending about four months with Kano Pillars.

The 28-year-old attacker was unveiled by the club earlier this month having undergone medical with the Ataturk Olympic Stadium outfit.

Sports Drill has now revealed that the former Premier League attacker will earn a staggering N1.02 billion ($2.5m) annually at the club.

This figure definitely positions the attacker among the top-earning Nigerian footballers across the globe.

The forward has now joined his new teammates as he hopes to revive his football career with this new move, while the Super Lig side is preparing for the coming 2021-22 league season.

Before his return to Europe, Musa parted ways with Al Nassr on mutual consent last October and attempted to join West Bromwich Albion in January but it failed to pull through on the last transfer day.

Nigeria’s D’Tigers’ chances of progressing to the next round of this summer Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games are slim after losing their first two games.

Coach Mike Brown’s men opened their campaign with an 84-67 defeat to Australia while their second game against Germany ended 99-92.

They have one more group game against Italy this weekend but their fate is not in their hands as far as qualifications are concerned.

These results are however contrary to the feat they achieved during their pre-Olympics qualification after beating Team United States and Argentina in friendly encounters.

And the former Nigerian basketball legend, Olumide Oyedeji, while reacting to the results insisted that friendlies are definitely different from the real competition.

The 40-year-old who won gold medal with the country’s national basketball team at the 2015 FIBA Africa Championship believes the reality of the game quickly settled in after the competition started.

He told . in an interview:

“First, we must acknowledge that the Olympics is different from friendly games, so, unfortunately, we have come to the reality that we have to take care of the ball and do what needed to be done.”

Oyedeji also won bronze medals at the 2005 and 2011 editions of the champions in Algeria and Madagascar.

Man Utd call off Preston friendly after suspected positive Covid tests

Manchester United have been forced to call off their friendly against Preston North End this weekend after a ‘small number’ of the first team training group tested positive for Covid.

The group are routinely checked and the positive lateral flow tests came to light following testing at the training ground on Thursday following the friendly against Brentford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were due to play Preston at Deepdale on Saturday afternoon but the game has been called off.

What do we know?

It is not known how many players have tested positive but the group is described as “small”. They were tested via lateral flow at the club’s training ground on Thursday and will now follow up with a PCR having tested positive.

The “small group” that have tested positive are a mixture of players and staff, it is understood.

As part of getting football back up and running safely after the very first lockdown the Premier League brought in a set of strict testing requirements where players and staff were tested twice a week and the results were published publicly.

Manchester United have additionally been doing their own testing as part of the club’s Covid-19 protocols.

What has been said?

A statement from the club read: “Maintaining COVID security is a priority for Manchester United. Following routine testing of the first-team training group today (Thursday), we have identified a small number of suspected positive cases.

“This has led to those people isolating, pending further tests.

“As a precautionary measure based on COVID protocols, we have taken the difficult decision that we will not now be able to play the friendly match against Preston North End this Saturday (31 July).

“We regret the disruption to Preston North End and disappointment caused to fans. Any Manchester United supporters who have purchased tickets for the game will be automatically refunded.

“At this stage, we do not expect further disruption around our forthcoming matches, but we will continue to follow Premier League protocols in this regard.”

What are their other pre-season plans?

The club were planning on another training camp, similar to the one they held in Surrey last week, before a final pre-season fixture against Everton on August 7.

At the moment it is understood the positive tests should not disrupt those plans. Solskjaer is expecting the remainder of his squad back on Monday after they were given a three week break due to their involvement in international competitions.

South Sudan have finished third in the Cecafa U23 Cup after defeating Kenya by a solitary goal.

Kariobangi Sharks attacker Dani Lual Gumanok scored the only goal to send the 10-man Emerging Stars home without a medal. The Stanley Okumbi-led charges had been reduced to a man less later into the game after Frank Odhiambo was sent off.

It was sweet revenge for the Sudanese who had lost 2-0 to Kenya in the group stage.

Kenya defeated Djibouti 3-0 in their opening group game before again claiming a win over South Sudan to advance to the last four. However, they fell to finalists Burundi 4-2 in post-match penalties after a 0-0 draw in regulation time.

On the other hand, South Sudan beat Djibouti 2-0 to finish as the best runners-up to make it to the semis. They were defeated by Tanzania by a solitary goal. The Kim Poulsen-led charges came into the match as favourites, but it was their opponents who dominated the proceedings. Though, they failed to capitalise on the chances they created.

They were eventually punished in the 64th minute. South Sudan conceded a foul in the danger zone and Naftal Kevin Nashon stepped up. His effort was deflected into the net and it happened to be the winning goal.

On Friday, Burundi and Tanzania will be meeting in the final.

“To make a team, it takes a long time. It took Al Ahly seven years to win the Champions League,” Mosimane told SAFM as quoted by iDiskiTimes.

“It took Mamelodi Sundowns, I don’t know how many years, maybe 43 or 45 to win the Champions League. It took Orlando Pirates I don’t know how many years to win the Champions League.

“So for Kaizer Chiefs to win the Champions League, there needs to be a serious, serious introspection in personal, in how the team should be directed.”

The tactician went on to advise the Soweto heavyweights that they have to have an identity and culture that they should stick to in order to stand a chance of winning.

“And also, you must have a coach that you want, you must have your coach. I don’t like this thing of people sending their CVs or applying for jobs, you must know who is your coach. Your coach must play the way you want. And sometimes you might lose games or whatever, but that is your coach,” Mosimane continued.

“You can’t go and look for anybody because he just won a cup somewhere. There are so many people who have won cups in South Africa but they are no longer coaching now.”

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies head coach Jerry Tshabalala has reacted to an ‘exciting’ Cosafa Caf Women’s Champions League draw that pitted his side against teams from neighbouring countries.

The Sundowns Ladies are in Group A, which also has Lesotho Defence Force, Double Action Ladies of Botswana and Eswatini’s Manzini Wanderers.

“It is an exciting group that we have found ourselves in. We are drawn with teams from our neighbouring countries, Lesotho, Botswana, and Eswatini, and I am very happy about that,” Tshabalala told the media.

“I am looking forward to playing in this tournament because it is the only chance that has been given to our ladies to go out there and prove our worth on the African continent. If you look, you will see other groups have three teams, but we are in a group of four and that has advantages and disadvantages.

“I would say the advantage is it would give us enough time to catch up with the momentum and give us the opportunity to see how other teams play. The disadvantage would be that we would have less time to rest because you play more games, possibly resting one day.”

The coach further stressed the importance of emerging at the top of their group as they hope to emulate their male counterparts by lifting the continental trophy. Sundowns’ men teams emerged as African champions in 2016.

“If we had found ourselves in Group B, we would have played fewer games with more time to rest, so it is either way. One would say he is quite happy with the draw, but what we need to do as a team is to go out there and win our group,” he added.

“I think the quality, it’s really high. Everyone is fighting for this opportunity to get into the team. Everyone wants to [impress] the manager, so you have to be able to show what you have,” Sowah told LCFC TV.

“I think I’ve seen a lot of good qualities. Everybody is showing really great qualities on the training ground. So, that is one of the things you always want from the first team players, especially when you come to first team football.

“You always need to show quality. The intensity has to be really high – that’s something I’ve really noticed in the first team so far. For me, I think I’ve been doing okay. I’ve been working so hard to be able to show everyone because it’s been a long time I’ve been in Leicester.

“So, everyone is watching to know where I’ve been and what I’ve got so I’m trying my best on the training ground.”

Sowah has already taken a giant step in his quest, making his first team debut for Leicester in a pre-season fixture against Burton Albion on Saturday.

On Wednesday, he made his second appearance, once again coming on at half-time in a defeat to Wycombe Wanderers.

“I’m feeling great, especially coming back to Leicester. It’s been a long time for me coming back here for me to get minutes with the first team,” said the winger.

“It’s always a great thing being able to be on the pitch, getting 45 minutes under my belt. That’s always the feeling – after a long holiday, you’re always going to get back your fitness, really good fitness, so that’s really great for me to get it back.”

Having rejected his first Ghana call-up in March, Sowah is expected to be handed a second Black Stars opportunity when they face Ethiopia and South Africa in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

“His [Baxter’s] results speak for themselves from the time he was last here at Chiefs. I am here for that – to play according to instructions,” Alexander told the Chiefs website.

“I am also hoping to bring some leadership into the team and doggedness and aggression, and I am also hoping to learn.

“The learner always wins. There are quality talented players around me, so I am here to learn. I just spoke to one of my family members and told them that there is everything here and you can’t have excuses being at a team like Chiefs. They look after you well. There’s everything that you need to succeed and do well.”

While insisting that the Chiefs stint is a learning curve, Alexander will join the likes of Itumeleng Khune, Daniel Akeyi, Daniel Cardoso, Erick Mathoho, Bernard Parker and Leonardo Castro as players above the age of 30 with PSL football experience.

“I try not to read too much into the media, but I still see there’s a lot out there. I can promise every Chiefs player and supporter is that I am a player who gives my best and nothing less. That’s all you can do,” said Alexander.

“I think what helps this team the most is the leadership of coach Stuart Baxter. As every player who has worked with him before will know, this guy is a leader and a tactician. If we as a team collectively follow his instruction and philosophy and we are united, we can do that.”

The midfielder has previously played for Cape Town Spurs, Chippa United, Polokwane City, SuperSport and Bidvest Wits.

“Chiefs was a team I supported growing up. I was always a fan of my local club, Hellenic. Kaizer Chiefs was my other club, so to be at Kaizer Chiefs at this stage of my career I can’t say enough how happy I am to be at a prestigious club like Chiefs,” Alexander said.

St. Louis Blues sign Brandon Saad to 5-year deal

The St. Louis Blues have made a sizeable splash, signing free-agent forward Brandon Saad to a five-year contract.

Saad, who spent last season with the Colorado Avalanche, will join the Blues on an average annual cap hit of $4.5 million.

It was an interesting season with the Avalanche for Saad, who scored 15 goals and 24 points in 44 games. He fell into more a depth role due to the strength of the Avalanche forward group, though he broke out a bit with increased responsibility in the postseason, scoring seven goals in 10 games.

Already a decade into his NHL career, Saad has largely performed a middle-six, secondary scoring level, topping out at 53 points in back-to-back seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He’s routinely managed strong underlying data, though his defensive game tailed off a bit in his second stint with the Chicago Blackhawks between 2017 and 2020.

He has, however, just come off a very impressive season from an analytical perspective, though the raw results didn’t quite mirror the shift-to-shift data.

St. Louis won’t quite provide the same environment as Colorado. However Saad should have increased role and the platform to continue serving as a positive influence inside the top six. He very much fits the characteristics of a Blues forward.

Saad’s signing further clouds the future of Vladimir Tarasenko, who is reportedly seeing a decline in interest from around the league, according to The Athletic.

St. Louis still has plenty of cap space with Tarasenko’s $7.5 million salary still on the books, but four restricted free agents still require deals. Those outstanding deals include Jordan Kyrou, Ivan Barbashev, Robert Thomas and Zach Sanford.

The improbable story of Suni Lee’s gold medal

TOKYO — Sunisa Lee was standing in the middle of Ariake Gymnastics Centre, standing on the verge of Olympic glory, standing 90 seconds from fulfilling a goal that seemed impossible from her first tumbles as a 6-year-old daughter of immigrants in Minnesota until, well, about 48 hours ago.

John Lee was sitting half a world away watching his 18-year-old daughter on television, sitting in the wheelchair that has mostly confined him since an accident left him partially paralyzed, sitting in the middle of a watch party for the local Hmong community where moments like this — Olympic greatness — simply don’t happen.

They were separated, father and daughter. Yet, somehow, they couldn’t have been closer.

“This,” Suni Lee said, a gold medal draped around her neck after coming through on floor and winning the women’s all-around competition, “is our dream.”

It was an improbable one. Oh, Suni had talent from Day 1, but what did her family know about elite gymnastics? Besides, she said, within the Hmongs exists a cultural hesitation to push toward big goals, to even step too far outside their close-knit families.

The Hmongs are a people from Southeast Asia who fought alongside the United States during the Vietnam War, got left behind and had to flee as refugees. Some made it to America, only to struggle for recognition, let alone acceptance.

They tend to stay within, Suni said, leaning on brothers and sisters and cousins and grandparents. Yet here was John Lee, who had come from Laos, not only never holding his bold, fearless daughter back, but also pushing her to consider even unthinkable heights — American heights.

You come so your children can have a better life. Why not the best life?

Why not you, he’d say? Why not us, he’d ask?

He and his wife, Yeev Thoj, would drive Suni to practice, drive her to meets, find ways to pay for new leotards and extra training. When Suni needed a balance beam at their home so she could put more hours in, John balked at the cost and simply built one himself.

They would find a way.

To Suni a gold medal was too much to consider. She had almost quit in 2020 during the boredom of quarantine — and again when she returned to training only to break her foot and it didn’t seem to heal. None of it seemed worth it in 2019, when two days before nationals, her dad fell while helping a neighbor trim a tree. The accident changed the course of everything.

Even when she made the Olympic team, gold wasn’t a consideration.

Her idol Simone Biles was here as well, the greatest gymnast ever, the reigning Olympic champion sitting on a nearly decade-long unbeaten streak. Biles had degrees of difficulty in her routines that made her nearly unbeatable. The gold was hers for the taking.

“I was competing for a silver medal,” Lee said.

Then on Wednesday, Biles withdrew from the all-around to work on her mental health. She cited an inability to focus on a vault during Tuesday’s team event. She would spend Thursday evening in the first row, cheering Suni, American Jade Carey and just about every other gymnast here on.

“Come on, Suni,” Biles shouted as Lee stood out on that mat, about to begin the final floor routine.

Suni tried to block it all out. The stakes. The score. The voices. Even the family back at home, crowded into a banquet hall just outside St. Paul, just waiting to go wild, just waiting to chant “USA! USA!”

She could feel her dad, though, always, even as he sat so far away, sporting a “Team Suni” T-shirt and seemingly dying of nerves.

“I’ve just been telling myself, ‘Do nothing less, nothing more,’ because everything I’ve been doing has been pretty good so far,” Lee said.

She delivered a strong performance and surged into first place. She waited out a final routine by silver medalist Rebeca Andrade before clinching gold.

She then tried to find her phone and a quiet spot amidst the frenzy to call home.

The medal ceremony was about to begin but that wasn’t her priority. She’d climb that podium and take her necklace of gold and proudly stare up as the American flag was raised and the American anthem was played.

But first things first.

“I Facetimed him,” Suni said.

“I was like, ‘I did it’ … and we all started crying.”

No, this was never the plan, except somehow this was always the plan. A father and a daughter and an immigrant family’s why-not spirit?

Here in a back area of the gymnastics hall, trying to make sense of it all, Suni Lee’s eyes welled up again.

“We always talked about, ‘If I won a gold medal, he would come out on the floor and do a backflip with me,’” she said.

The accident and the pandemic made that impossible. And yet neither distance nor disability mattered right then.

“We were all just crying on the phone,” Suni said. “It was a very, very surreal moment. I am super proud of them. My parents are just the most amazing people in my life.

“I love them so much.”

Steve Spurrier on Texas moving to SEC: Longhorns ‘can’t win the Big 12 anyway’

The Head Ball Coach still has some jokes.

Retired college football coach Steve Spurrier, who coached 23 of his 26 seasons in the SEC, poked fun at the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma for their decisions to leave the Big 12 and join the SEC.

“I can understand Texas jumping over,” Spurrier said, according to the Orlando Sentinel. “They get to play Texas A&M again. They get to … they can’t win the Big 12 anyway.

“I think they’re only won two in the last 30 years or so. What is it?”

The Longhorns have recently struggled to stay among the top teams in college football. Texas last won the conference in 2009 after previously winning it in 2005 and 1996. The Longhorns are on their third head coach since coach Mack Brown resigned in 2013.

Steve Spurrier spent 23 of his 26 seasons as a college football head coach in the SEC.

Oklahoma, on the other hand, has won the Big 12 the last six seasons.

“I’m sort of surprised Oklahoma,” Spurrier said, according to the Sentinel. “I just don’t think they’re going to come over to the SEC and win with any regularity the way that they win the Big 12. Their fans might say, ‘Yeah, now we can beat Alabama and LSU and all these dudes.’ It may not happen like that.

“I don’t know. It’s obviously more money.”

On Tuesday, Texas and Oklahoma formally applied to join the SEC after announcing their intent to withdraw from the Big 12.

It is widely expected that both schools would be able to leave for the SEC in advance of that 2025 date, though not without coming to a buyout agreement with the Big 12.

“I feel sorry for the other schools, Kansas State, Kansas, Iowa State, all those guys, because they obviously need those two schools there,” Spurrier said of Texas and Oklahoma. “It (the move to the SEC) looks like it’s going to happen. Maybe it will work out for the best.”

Serbia coach: team was against Djokovic’s mixed doubles play

TOKYO (AP) — With so much on the line — the Golden Slam, the calendar-year Grand Slam, Olympic singles gold — it’s been a mystery to many why Novak Djokovic entered the mixed doubles tournament at the Tokyo Olympics.

Why risk injury or getting fatigued because of an event that doesn’t have much of a following and might distract from the more pressing goals within reach?

“I was against it. The whole team was against it,” Viktor Troicki, Serbia’s Olympic team coach and Davis Cup captain, told The Associated Press in an interview after Djokovic reached the semifinals in both singles and mixed on Thursday. “It was just him. He wanted to play.”

So there Djokovic was, partnering with Nina Stojanovic to beat the German pair of Laura Siegemund and Kevin Krawietz 6-1, 6-2 in a match that started less than two hours after he routed Kei Nishikori of host Japan 6-2, 6-0 in singles.

“I thought he had enough of tennis the last months,” Troicki said. “Really, he played so much.”

Djokovic, who has already won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year, needs the Tokyo Games title and the U.S. Open trophy in singles to become the first man to achieve the Golden Slam.

“Everyone was thinking about the singles,” Troicki said. “When he said he wanted to play mixed, I was like, ‘OK, (if) it means that much to him and he wants to prove that he’s ready and in the mixed matches he’s giving everything, he’s 100% focused on going all the way, then OK.’

“He’s looking for a harder challenge,” Troicki added with a laugh.

Marian Vajda and Goran Ivanisevic, Djokovic’s personal coaches, didn’t travel to Tokyo. But Troicki has been talking to Ivanisevic.

“It’s working well so far,” Troicki said. “I’m glad he’s having short matches in both events.”

Djokovic hasn’t lost a set yet in singles or mixed doubles.

But Djokovic could face his biggest test of the Olympic tournament against fifth-ranked Alexander Zverev on Friday — even though Djokovic holds a 6-2 career edge over the German and has not lost to Zverev in nearly three years.

“It’s probably the final before the finals,” Troicki said. “It’s going to be an interesting match.”

Troicki, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 12 in 2011, retired from playing after failing to qualify for Wimbledon this year. He was a teammate of Djokovic’s on the Serbian team that won the Davis Cup in 2010 — a title that many credit with giving Djokovic the motivation and belief that he could contend with tennis greats Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

More than a decade later, Djokovic matched Federer and Nadal with his 20th Grand Slam title by winning Wimbledon this month.

And if he completes the Golden Slam, he’ll also surpass both of his longtime rivals with his 21st major title at the U.S. Open and become the first man to win a calendar-year Grand Slam since Rod Laver in 1969.

The 34-year-old Djokovic is already the first man since Laver in ’69 to win the first three major tournaments in a season.

To Troicki, it doesn’t even matter what Djokovic does from here on in terms of the comparisons with Federer and Nadal — both of whom Djokovic holds winning records against.

“Already now, it’s obvious that he’s the greatest in our sport,” Troicki said. “The greatest ever to play and to achieve so many records.

“They’re both great champions, both Rafa and Roger, and I admire what they’ve done. But really Novak has (reached) new heights and new records and he’s for sure not going to stop here. He’s going to prove that he’s the best ever player.”

Still, Djokovic is often not as revered as Federer and Nadal are worldwide.

“There is no point of talking again and again about that question,” Troicki said. “Roger and Rafa came first. Novak came after them, from a small country, Serbia. … Some people are just more for Roger and Rafa because Novak came after them. Novak has his fans.”

Among the Big Three, only Djokovic came to Tokyo, and whether he wins gold or not, he’ll be going for the calendar Grand Slam at the U.S. Open starting next month.

“He’s mentally ready for everything,” Troicki said. “What he’s doing in our sport is something special and he’s mentally tougher than anyone ever in this game.”

U.S. Olympic swimmer Caeleb Dressel has earned comparisons to Michael Phelps, but he shuns them.

The 24-year-old Dressel on Wednesday took home the gold medal in the men’s 100-meter freestyle, breaking the Olympic record in the process.

Dressel now has two gold medals in Tokyo and has a chance for four more with the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, 4×100-meter medley relay, and the 4×100-meter mixed relay.

With such a packed, diverse slate, and several world and Olympic records already in hand, Dressel could reasonably target Phelps’ throne. Instead, he told NBC that he doesn’t think they should be compared.

“I don’t think it’s fair to Michael,” Dressel said.. “He’s a better swimmer than me. I’m completely fine with saying that. That’s not my goal in the sport, to beat Michael. I’m a very different athlete than Michael. He was at a whole other level.”

Dressel said he doesn’t mind if others make the comparison to Phelps, but he doesn’t like to stack himself up to the most decorated Olympian of all-time.

“I’m fine if people want to compare me to him,” Dressel said. “I have some goals that I would like to accomplish to where I can consider myself to be great, and I don’t have to compare myself to Michael to consider myself to be great.”

As Dressel elaborated in the interview, those goals don’t have much to do with medal counts.

“If I learn something from the meet to move forward into next year, if I learn something about myself, as a man, as a person, as an athlete, as a swimmer, I’ll be happy with it,” Dressel said on what would make the Tokyo Olympics successful for him.

He added that he doesn’t even keep his medals.

“It’s not about that for me, I don’t keep any of that stuff,” Dressel said, adding: “I get to enjoy the race. I don’t need a piece of medal to remind me of that. “

The Bears were without three key players during Wednesday’s first practice as safety Eddie Jackson (hamstring), offensive tackle Germain Ifedi and offensive tackle Teven Jenkins (back) were all held out. Following practice, Chicago placed Jackson on the Non-Football Injury list, which indicates his injury occurred away from the team. Once Jackson has been medically cleared, he can return to practice. For Ifedi, he was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list after suffering a hip flexor during his condition test at the start of camp. A player can be removed from the PUP list and start practicing at any time during training camp. But head coach Matt Nagy didn’t sound too concerned about those injuries.

Robert Quinn out to prove 2020 performance was an outlier

Arguably the biggest disappointment of the 2020 season was edge rusher Robert Quinn, who managed a career-low two sacks for the Bears after signing a massive contract. When Quinn met with the media on Wednesday, he didn’t mince words when describing his performance last season. “I’ll be honest. Just a terrible year for me, personally,” Quinn said, via the Sun-Times. “No excuses. But last year is last year. You can’t change it. So I’ll leave that where it’s at and move on to 2021.” While last year was disappointing, Quinn is looking ahead to the 2021 season, where he understands what the Bears need from him. “Everyone is on the same page, and we understand what I need and what the team needs from me,” Quinn said. “I’ll just leave it at that. They know where I’m best at, and we’ll just keep it there.”

Khalil Mack knows he needs to ‘get to the damn quarterback’

Khalil Mack remains one of the most formidable defensive players in the NFL. But while Mack has always been more than what the box score indicated, his job is ultimately to get after the quarterback. And over the last two seasons, he’s failed to notch double-digit sacks, recording 9.0 in 2020. “That’s what we got paid to do, coming in and affecting the game by getting to the quarterback and creating turnovers and short fields for the offense,” Mack said. “Ultimately, that’s the goal. Of course, we’re not satisfied with the result last year. So there’s work to be done. Enough talking, I don’t do that. I don’t like to talk about it.” But Mack knows that he can get back to the level of play that makes him a formidable threat on every play. “For me personally, I know I can play better,” he said. “So ultimately, what I can control is what I can control. And that’s everybody’s approach to this season: What you can control is what you can control. But what you bring to the table, we’ve got to bring it all together and be what we know we can be — and that’s a great defense. Just talking about it is not something that I’m accustomed to. I’m an action guy. So I’m not going to say shit. I’ll show you plays.” While Mack still had a solid season, it was impressive given a string of injuries he suffered throughout the year, where he was a regular on the injury report. But Mack won’t make excuses. “I’m out there, I’m 100 percent,” he said. “I’m not blaming anything on anything, you know what I’m saying? When I’m out there, I’m doing whatever I can to help the team win. That’s ultimately the kind of guy you got with me.”

The Bears are coming off back-to-back 8-8 seasons, which is certainly a disappointment following their 2018 campaign and the talent on this team. Speaking with the media, Nagy promised that there’s going to be a sense of urgency throughout training camp as this team looks to rebound in 2021. “When you talk about philosophically where we’re at, you’re going to see and feel a team that practices hard,” Nagy told reporters. “That emphasis that we’re talking about is going to be on a different level than what you all have seen in three years here with me.” The Bears held a light practice on Wednesday, which was a scripted, no-helmets practice. But expect that to change as the team kicks it into gear.

“The practices that we have are going to be fast,” Nagy said. “There’s going to be no walking around. Every rep is going to count. In 10 reps, you might see a starter get four reps, but those four reps are going to be a hundred miles an hour—and if they’re not, they won’t be on the field.

“We’re going to take that and we’re going to use that for Sundays, and Sundays are going to be easy.”

Big 12 reportedly plans to make leaving ‘as difficult as possible’ for Texas, Oklahoma

The planned withdrawal of Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12 Conference won’t be an easy one.

Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports reported the Big 12 plans to make the departure of Oklahoma and Texas for the Southeastern Conferences “as difficult as possible” by invoking the “’disinterested directors’ clause in its bylaws.”

The other eight Big 12 schools, including Kansas and K-State, would be considered the “disinterested directors,” because they have no personal interest in seeing Texas or Oklahoma leave the conference.

The CBS story notes Big 12 bylaws say if even one of its schools remains in the conference, it can sue any group viewed as aiding the departure of other members. That includes the SEC (which is likely to add Texas and Oklahoma), the American Athletic Conference (which reportedly has eyes on Big 12 schools) or ESPN (which Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby says is actively trying to break up the conference).

“After losing four teams in the last round of conference realignment a decade ago, those bylaws were drafted in 2012 to stand for a period of 99 years,” Dodd wrote. “Texas and Oklahoma were part of the group who, according to one source, wanted the longest agreement possible.

“That last round of realignment led to the Big 12 registering itself as a corporation in the state of Delaware. That helps prevent (any) case from being heard in Texas where the University of Texas might have a legal advantage.”

Earlier this week, Oklahoma and Texas informed the Big 12 they won’t renew their grant of rights of media with the conference past 2025. Bowlsby told CBS that the Big 12 intends to make Texas and Oklahoma honor that grant of rights though 2025.

However, if the Big 12 fell apart before then because, say, some schools went to the AAC, that would open the door for Oklahoma and Texas to join the SEC early.

“Oklahoma and Texas are going to do everything they can to get out of the grant of rights and get out of the bylaw stipulations,” Bowlsby said. “It’s going to be a long process.”

Opinion: What the Big 12 can learn from the Sun Belt as conference realignment looms

MONROE, La. — Let’s begin with a layman’s analysis.

A cartoon dog sits at a table enjoying a cup of coffee. Never mind that the room is engulfed in flames. Our jovial canine subject sips away unbothered. The dog smiles and says, “This is fine.”

This is quite far from fine.

Welcome back to conference realignment. Where a two-panel meme perfectly sums up the future of the Big 12 without Oklahoma and Texas. Both schools announced their intent to leave the conference on Monday and have since applied for SEC membership.

Bleak as it seems, there is a path forward for the Big 12’s eight remaining members. Leadership at Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia should look at the Sun Belt Conference as a case study in how to turn back oblivion.

The Sun Belt was left for dead just a decade ago. A casualty from the Big East’s football schools rebranding as the American Athletic Conference and raiding Conference USA. Since realignment always rolls downhill, C-USA lured Florida Atlantic, Florida International, North Texas and Western Kentucky away from the Sun Belt.

At the time, new frontiers mattered most. The thinking was conferences could demand a larger subscriber fee from cable providers by getting their marquee brands on in other television markets. Hence the Big Ten adding Maryland and Rutgers while the SEC brought in Missouri and Texas A&M.

It was more about increasing the visibility of schools like Alabama and Ohio State than what these new affiliations brought with them.

Except that logic didn’t hold up at the Group of Five level. C-USA found itself irrelevant in Florida and Dallas/Fort Worth while the programs in those markets played awful football. Even now, the league has no discernable identity post expansion sans a bewildering media rights package that leaves its teams toiling in anonymity.

Sun Belt commissioner Karl Benson went in a different direction, adding two tradition-rich powers from FCS in Appalachian State and Georgia Southern. While the footprint expanded to include Coastal Carolina, entrenched members like Arkansas State, Georgia State, Louisiana-Lafayette and Troy maximized their locations and resources to build successful programs.

Benson retired in 2019, leaving behind a conference nipping at the AAC’s heels as the G5’s best. The Sun Belt boasted 21 nonconference wins, including a 3-0 mark against the Big 12, while Coastal Carolina and Louisiana-Lafayette were each ranked at the end of the season. Television viewership increased by 135% in 2020, with seven games surpassing 1 million viewers.

Now the landscape has changed again. Cable systems lose more subscribers each year while viewers migrate to different platforms for their college football consumption. ESPN and Fox realize this, which makes the Big 12 a potential casualty in the competition between these networks.

Disney, which owns ESPN and ABC, paid $3 billion in December for the exclusive broadcast rights for SEC football beginning in 2024. ESPN also operates the SEC Network, ACC Network and Texas’ Longhorn Network.

Fox has television agreements with the Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and exclusive rights to the Big Ten and Pac-12 championship games. The Big 12’s deals with ESPN and Fox expire in 2025, leaving Oklahoma and Texas free to join the SEC on Disney-owned platforms.

ESPN is essentially using realignment to counterprogram Fox, leaving no doubt once again who really runs college football. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby even accused the worldwide leader of enticing the remaining Big 12 schools to leave the conference.

The Big 12’s best chance at survival is sticking together — at least for now. Unless the college football oligarchs decide otherwise, the league can backfill from the AAC and the Mountain West while maintaining Power 5 status. College football is largely a consumer product, but the Sun Belt has shown playing the sport at a high level still matters.

While Big 12 schools each received $37.7 million in television revenue during the 2019-20 school year, that number will undoubtedly plummet without Oklahoma and Texas. Even with the drop off, those payouts may still be more lucrative than the $5.3 million each AAC member received this year.

On the field, a reconstituted Big 12 with Boise State, Central Florida, Houston and possibly an independent like BYU would expand the footprint and preserve a conference identity centered on high-powered offenses. Not to mention create compelling TV, which is ESPN’s endgame to begin with.

Maybe everything will be fine after all.

The GFA official reveals his quest to set a football philosophy that has not received support

Ghana Football Association technical director Bernhard Lippert has lamented the lack of cooperation from coaches in his quest to document a blueprint for the West African country.

The German coach was appointed into his role in October last year, filling the vacancy left by the departure of Francis Oti Akenteng.

Among the former Eintracht Frankfurt caretaker coach’s responsibilities is the formulation of guidelines, strategies and policies for the training and the technical development of coaches of Ghana football, and the preparation and implementation of technical programmes at the grassroots, juvenile, and national teams.

“In our survey to find a DNA for Ghana football, I sent a questionnaire to all the Premier League, Division One, women’s league, national team coaches and ex-footballers but almost 60 percent of them has still not responded to my questions and I don’t know why,” Lippert told Angel FM.

“After going through the former GFA technical director’s blueprint that he left behind, I saw a lot of ideas and I can’t fathom why he couldn’t draft any football philosophy for Ghana.”

Lippert’s only past experience with a national outfit was a role as technical director of the Associations of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA), where he also coached the nation’s U17, U19 and U21 teams.

He was in the Azerbaijani technical directorship job since 2008 until his appointment for the Ghana position.

“Football is not so difficult; it is the same everywhere, but we only have different kinds of organisations, structures and different kinds of culture and education which is very important to develop a country’s football,” Lippert said in October last year, shortly after taking up the Ghana challenge.

“We have to find out the DNA of this country, which means we have to develop our national football philosophy which I cannot decide alone.

“So I need the help of the people in this country to define the DNA of the country and then follow a structured way through which youth football will be organized and bring it through the youth national teams to the top.”

Ghana, four-time African champions at senior level, U17 world champions in 1991 and 1995, and U20 world champions in 2009, are seeking to turn around their recent disappointing fortunes at the international stage.

“Ghanaians gave me the support and everything a country needed to give to a player. Ghanaians gave 100 percent,” 29-year-old Atsu, who burst onto the international scene as a 20-year-old Porto winger in 2012, told 3Sports.

“Now for Kudus and the other younger ones, they [Ghanaians] need to support them. It is not easy to be consistent but they must give all the support. I know Ghana is building a team now, it takes time and it is not easy but they need to be patient with them.”

“My advice to the young players is that they don’t have many chances in the Black Stars. A lot of people are fighting for positions, so when you have your chance, just take it, this is football and it is about chance.

“Everyone knows how to play football. Don’t tell yourself you are young because [Kylian] Mbappe and [Erling Braut] Haaland are young but are playing at the top level.”

Arguably, Ghana’s biggest ambition is to win the Africa Cup of Nations tournament again, having endured a series of disappointments since their last title in 1982.

In 2015, the Black Stars, inspired by Atsu, went close to ending their drought but were unlucky to give up a lead during a penalty shoot-out with Cote d’Ivoire to end up as the losing side.

“I still don’t believe we lost that tournament,” the attacker, who won the Player of the Tournament in Equatorial Guinea, said.

“That trophy was like when someone gives you something; you just take it. And today I’ll say Ghanaians are right, whatever words they say to us, we deserve it because we gave the tournament away and it was really bad.

“Until now I feel very sad that I am 29, I’m growing and I’ve still not won the Afcon title, and it’s very sad.”

“I’d say with the kind of players we have, we shouldn’t be speaking about the Black Stars not winning the Afcon for like 35 years or 36 years. It shouldn’t be possible.

“Ghana has produced a lot of top talent like Michael Essien, Muntari, Asamoah Gyan, John Mensah, Dede Ayew. It’s crazy, but this is the situation we are in.”

Atsu, who recently signed for Saudi side Al Raed, will be hoping to make the Ghana team for possibly his last quest for an Afcon title when the tournament comes around again in January.

The big five wild animals on the trophy are a lion, cheetah, buffalo, elephant and the Rhino. The trophy stands at 80cm and weighs 11kgs.

The wait for the 24-carat trophy has dragged on, with FKF President Nick Mwendwa confirming to Goal its arrival had been hindered by the Covid-19 pandemic traveling protocols and, initially, there was uncertainty whether the winning team will take home a trophy when the season ends on August 22.
