A British man has been arrested at Brisbane airport after allegedly trying to flee the country following a fatal hit and run on Monday.

Graham Belcher, 52, was allegedly caught with a one-way ticket to London on Tuesday morning, just hours after a motorcyclist was killed in a crash.

He is accused of colliding with two motorcycles on Tweed Valley Way in Tumbulgum, nearby the Queensland NSW border, just before 3.30pm on Monday.

NSW Police said in a statement Belcher was ‘stopped just before 2am at Brisbane Airport as he was preparing to board a flight to Hong Kong’.

Mr Belcher had reportedly been living on the Gold Coast for the past four years.

Police allege Belcher was preparing to board a flight to Hong Kong before he was dramatically arrested at the airport (stock image of Brisbane airport)

One rider died at the scene, while the second escaped with minor injuries.

Police allege the British national fled the scene, instead of stopping to help the men.

The car he was allegedly driving, a bright blue Hyundai i30 with a smashed windscreen, missing front bumper, and Queensland number plate 170 ZCP, has not been found.

Police are searching parking lots at train stations on the Gold Coast, as Belcher is thought to have taken the train to the airport.

Belcher was arrested before boarding a plane, and is currently being held in a Brisbane watch house.

He is yet to be charged over his alleged involvement in the crash.

He will face a hearing at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday to extradite him back to NSW once charges have been laid.

Belcher (pictured with a friend) is accused of hitting two motorcyclists while behind the wheel of a car in Tumbulgum, near the QLD/NSW border on Monday afternoon
