One victim is dead and at least one other person was injured after a daytime rampage by a knife-wielding man in Kingston, Ont., that ended after the assailant was shot by police.

Police were called to a downtown intersection by reports of an assault just before 2 p.m. ET.

When they arrived, officers confronted a 22-year-old man who was armed with a knife, according to the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

He had stabbed another man and began moving toward one of the officers, according to one witness. During the confrontation that followed, the man also attacked another person.

According to the SIU, one officer shot the knife-wielding man. Soon after, he began harming himself with the knife and a second officer shot him with a stun gun, the SIU said.

The knife-wielding man was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the SIU and one of the people he had attacked, a 40-year-old man, died from his injuries. Their identities have not been released.

The attacks happened outside a residential building at the corner of Queen and Bagot streets.

Witness Peter Hoang told Radio-Canada he saw a man stab two people outside the building.

Hoang, who works at a nail salon across the street, saw a passersby try to help one of the victims, then saw the assailant move toward a police officer, who opened fire.

“The police officer was asking the man to drop the knife, but he didn’t.”

Another witness, Holly Nguyen, said it was a horrifying scene.

“I have never seen something like this before in my life. It was just crazy,” Nguyen said.

Paramedics confirmed they transported “multiple patients” to hospital but would not elaborate on any details.

The SIU investigates deaths, serious injuries and allegations of sexual assault involving police in Ontario.
