It’s probably difficult to date when you’re a celebrity. Dating is hard, period. Put that relationship under the microscope of the public eye, and even the smallest of issues could turn into a headline. That said, it’s no wonder most celebrities tend to be very private when it comes to their personal lives. Zooey Deschanel — who you might remember from a little show called New Girl–is no exception, which is why it was so fun to see her recently open up about her boyfriend, Jonathan Scott of HGTV’s Property Brothers.
Zooey Deschanel sat down with USA Today to discuss her new gig hosting ABC’s The Celebrity Dating Game. When asked whether or not she would consider looking for love on the dating show, she took the opportunity to touch on her boyfriend:
I’m just very private and, of course, I’m taken. I have the best boyfriend in the world. No, that wouldn’t be me.
The ‘best boyfriend’ in question is Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott, who was actually nervous about Emily Deschanel’s latest project. He explained:
When Zooey first told me she was doing the show, she was really excited. I saw the sets, and the sets looked amazing. I love the set design. But it was so funny ‘cause when she first said she was doing The (Celebrity) Dating Game, there was an awkward pause, and I was like ‘Wait, but as a host, right? Not as a contestant?’ And she’s like, ‘Yeah, as a host.’
Crisis averted.
It sounds like Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott is otherwise totally supportive, which is probably one of the reasons Zooey Deschanel was singing his praises. She’s posted about him on her Instagram multiple times, including a 2021 New Year’s post that referred to him as her ‘2020 MVP.’ Last April, her birthday post for Jonathan Scott called him ‘kind, sweet, wonderful, hilarious, clever, generous, caring’ and ‘handsome,’ all in the same sentence.
Fortunately, Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott seems to be on the same page. Zooey Deschanel is occasionally fawned over on his Instagram as well. One post described her as Jonathan Scotts’ ‘perfect person.’ Sounds like boyfriends everywhere should be taking notes.
Zooey Deschanel may be pretty private, but we did get to see her goof around with Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott in a December 2020 episode of HGTV’s Celebrity IOU. The show features the Property Brothers renovating houses alongside various celebrities who wanted to give back to their communities. Zooey Deschanel admitted that demolition was not her strong suit, but she did her best. And let’s be honest, we were watching that episode to see the couple be cute together, not destroy some cabinets.
The first episode of The Celebrity Dating Game will premiere June 14, 2021 at 10 pm on ABC. In addition to Zooey Deschanel, the show will also feature Michael Bolton. The Grammy Award winner’s previous television appearances include SNL and Lip Sync Battle. We’ll have to wait to see how it plays out on air, but it’s nice to see Deschanel heading back to TV again.
