Youths have sought active involvement in governance, deploring the ‘sit-tightism’ of the older generation, whom they argued were “closer to their graves.”

During a youth dialogue themed “Towards A Peaceful and Prosperous Plateau” jointly organised by Global Peace and Life Rescue Initiative (GOPRI) and Plateau Intelligentsia Development Initiative in Jos, the young Nigerians argued that they have untapped fresh ideas to govern the country for “dynamic leadership” to crystallise.

At the event yesterday, they noted that it was time for youths to chart the path for the nation’s greatness, citing instances from both developed and developing countries.

Stating they were not afraid to speak the truth to power, the future leaders of tomorrow promised to sustain the programme on a quarterly basis.

To achieve the task ahead, the young minds challenged themselves on responsibility and purpose.

“We must be disciplined well enough, anything short of this will mean we are not better off than the old generation we are condemning.”

The first guest speaker, Dr. Chris Kwaja of Modibbo Adamawa University of Technology, Yola who spoke on “The role of good governance in promoting peace,” reminded the youths that the reality should dawn on them that as future leaders, they represent the future of the country, but regretted that the youths were witnessing negligence from government.

Kwaja cautioned the participants against lowering bar in the name of religion and ethnicity.

He lamented that the #EndSARS protests were profiled along fault lines at a point.

On the way out, Kwaja canvassed advocacy, dialogue and roundtable discussion in governance.

Commander, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), Major General Chukwuemeka Okonkwo, who was represented by his deputy, DCP Emmanuel Ado, congratulated the organisers for their orderly conduct.

Admitting that the #EndSARS protests had rights to ventilate, he, however, noted that the exercise but must be within the ambit of the rule of law.

Governor Simon Lalong, who represented by the Director – General, Research and Documentation, Government House, Prof. John Wade, described the theme as apt, adding that government would do everything to promote dialogue.

Dr. Kingsley Madueke of the University of Jos, who spoke on “Understanding the rudiments of peace and social prosperity”, regretted that youths were most affected by violence.
