Sega has announced that 2020 is going to be the year of Sonic.
News surrounding the character will be announced each month on the 20th day.
This new strategy may not be enough to save Sonic’s reputation.
Sonic the Hedgehog has had his ups and downs. His earlier games were classics. They really did bring speed to gaming and showed off the power of the Sega Genesis. Then things starting looking shaky around the time Sonic R came out.
These days Sonic has become something of a joke to some. He has crazy fans (Sorry guys it’s true I’ve seen the fanfics), his games are of inconsistent quality. Worse of all he is in the hands of people who don’t understand him. Now Sega is promising to make 2020 Sonic’s year.

If there is one thing that the past nearly 30 years of Sonic The Hedgehog canon has shown us, it’s that Sega has no idea what they’re doing with the character. They’ve insisted on expanding his cavalcade of neon friends rather than focusing on strengthening the elements that made Sonic good.
For each of their decent games, they’ve produced 3 terrible ones. They also, almost certainly, okayed the terrible-looking original live-action Sonic design. At this point, they are not the best thing for Sonic anymore. That’s the reason that I’m so skeptical of Sonic 2020.
The movie is coming soon. That will either make or break Sonic. But, you have to wonder why it’s coming out at all. A Sonic movie shouldn’t look like this. It should look just like those amazing Sonic shorts we’ve been seeing since Sonic Mania came out.

There is a chance that the new Sonic The Hedgehog news which will be coming out of 2020 will actually save Sonic. Maybe the movie will be good. I doubt it, but stranger things have happened. There is however a way to guarantee Sonic’s survival and quality.
Basically, Sonic Team should just hire the Mania people full time. I’m not saying that there’s nothing wrong with Sonic Mania. I am however saying that the people behind it clearly know what works and what doesn’t.
I don’t see that happening, unfortunately. Sonic 2020 is going to fill the year with news about the blue blur though. Maybe, if we’re lucky, Sonic Team will at least announce some more collaborations with Christian Whitehead and Pagoda Games.
Either that or they’ll just straight-up cancel the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
