Nintendo just released the first of two expansion waves for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. What new weapons, fighters, and battles are inside?

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was a pleasant surprise for fans of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the WildAge of Calamity did justice to BOTW‘s characters, visuals, and music, making it feel like a true expansion of the Zelda universe. After teasing an expansion earlier in 2021, Nintendo released the first of two DLC waves on June 18th, shortly after they announced its contents at E3. But unless the expansion is played in full, it can be difficult to figure out at a glance exactly what’s in it.

Age of Calamity is a 1v100 musou game that allows the player to experience Calamity Ganon’s attack on Hyrule 100 years prior to Breath of the Wild. However, the game surprised fans by splitting the Zelda timeline. Nintendo has not confirmed that Age of Calamity is canonical, but their intense oversight of the game’s production and lore suggests that Age of Calamity likely does have a place on the official timeline.

Nintendo’s language around the DLC’s details has been vague, leading to some question about exactly what will be in either wave. The second wave, in particular, promises a tantalizing “new roster.” Breath of the Wild’s DLC added a lot of fantastic content, including Master Mode and the Hero’s Path tracker. So how does Age of Calamity‘s DLC stack up so far?

What’s Inside Age of Calamity’s Pulse of the Ancients Expansion

Wave 1 of the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity DLC is entitled Pulse of the Ancients. Its mechanics center around doing tasks for Purah and Robbie at a new location, the Royal Ancient Tech Lab. These tasks unlock via battle accomplishments and items, similar to character upgrades – they can even be tracked with the Sheikah Sensor. There are a few simultaneous branches of the track, with one completed task unlocking the next. Doing new tasks helps Purah and Robbie with their research, which in turn unlocks new expansion elements. However, the game cheekily does not allow the player to see what or where unlockable elements actually are.

However, the trailer does provide some clues. Players can gain the playable Battle-Tested Guardian. The Guardian contains all the devastating abilities which have caused so many “Game Over” screens, but contrary to some speculations about the DLC’s teaser, Purah and Robbie are not added to the roster of fighters.

The research also results in a new weapon for Link called the Flail, which is best equated to the combination of a nunchuck, a whip, and a Guardian arm. Three versions of the Flail are eventually discovered: the initial Guardian Flail, the Ancient Bladed Flail, and the Fortified Flail. Another research branch results in allowing Zelda to equip the Master Cycle as a weapon. Players of the Breath of the Wild DLC will recognize the Master Cycle Zero as the grand prize of the Champions’ Ballad expansion. The Master Cycle modifies Zelda’s Rune abilities and comes in three levels: Master Cycle, Master Cycle Hunter, and Master Cycle Sentinel.

New battles appear on the map after tasks in the Tech Lab are completed, which add hours of gameplay. The lowest recommended level for these battles is in the 50s, though very quickly, some early battles rocket to a recommended level of 83, which makes playing the post-game and unlocking Age of Calamity’s secret ending recommended. Battles also contain new enemies, such as gigantic Chuchus, Moblins who hurl barrels of dynamite, and buffed Wizzrobes. The ability to fight “vicious monsters” is also unlocked in the Tech Lab.

Overall, the new Pulse of the Ancients DLC for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity adds a lot of fun new aspects to gameplay. As long as players haven’t tired of the musou genre itself, the DLC packs enough new twists to keep Age of Calamity feeling fresh and exciting.
