Trump-appointed U.S. ambassador to Brazil retires
BRASILIA (Reuters) -The United States ambassador to Brazil, Todd Chapman, said on Thursday that he is retiring for personal reasons after just 14 months in Brasilia, ending a State Department career spanning three decades. Chapman was appointed by former President Donald Trump and established close ties with Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, an admirer of Trump who echoed his allegations of U.S. election fraud.

Lawyers: Avenatti shamed, merits leniency for Nike extortion
Michael Avenatti should spend no more than six months behind bars after a jury concluded he tried to extort $25 million from sportswear giant Nike, his lawyers told a judge Wednesday, saying the once high-flying California attorney faces constant ridicule after his “cataclysmic fall.” In a sentencing memorandum in Manhattan federal court, the lawyers wrote that Avenatti had suffered enough from a three-month stint in prison when his bail was revoked last year and from public ridicule. Probation Department calculated federal sentencing guidelines to call for a sentence of 11 to 14 years in prison, Avenatti’s lawyers noted.

GameStop Corp Chairman Ryan Cohen made a point of doing away with corporate excess such as a company plane and used the allure of rebuilding the videogame retailer to recruit Amazon.com Inc’s Australia chief Matt Furlong as chief executive, according to people familiar with the process. Cohen wanted the message to be stern, said the sources, who were close to the discussions. The transformation of the ailing brick-and-mortar retailer into an e-commerce powerhouse would require laser-like focus and determination, Cohen told Furlong.

Injury likely to keep Brewers 3B Shaw out until August
Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Travis Shaw likely won’t return until August after dislocating his left shoulder diving for a ground ball this week. Shaw got hurt Wednesday at Cincinnati and was placed on the injured list the next day. Brewers manager Craig Counsell provided a timetable before Friday’s game with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
