Walt Disney World is gearing up for its 50th anniversary celebration this year and while the parks are getting ready to open new attractions and fireworks shows, two resorts are getting rethemed to integrate Disney characters. At Disney’s Contemporary Resort characters from Disney and Pixar’s The Incredibles are being added to rooms in the main building and the garden wing. Just a short monorail ride away at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort rooms are being refurbished into Moana-themed rooms.

The multi-billion dollar refurbishment of Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has been a huge undertaking. Disney has tasked its Imagineering teams and construction crews to completely redo the main entrance into the hotel, including the monorail station on the second floor, along with each of the guest rooms that are not part of the Disney Vacation Club Villas. The refurbishments have been ongoing since fall 2020, and because of that the resort had its reopening after the pandemic delayed multiple times between July 2020 and July 2021.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort has seen its fair share of upgrades throughout the years, but for the most part the rooms and inside of the resort have remained the same since opening day. Each room will feature newly remodeled bathrooms and living spaces, along with nods to The Incredibles like seeing their super suits in the closet. This multi-billion dollar refurbishment has already begun and will be complete by the start of the 50th anniversary celebration October 1, 2021.

The room refreshes at both resorts come after years of the two rooms looking similar to the way they did when the resorts first opened in the 1970s. Fast forward to 2021, on the heels of Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary both resorts have integrated characters from beloved Disney films into the overall design of the rooms. While this may not seem like a huge deal to the average Disney fan who is just looking for a place close to the parks to sleep at night, Disney fanatics can’t seem to get enough of the rooms that feature subtle, and not-so-subtle nods to Disney characters or movies and the company has noticed.

Because the rooms are newer and have more amenities than ever before it’s likely that Disney will raise the cost of the rooms from the already high cost of over $500 a night to something even higher. The refurbishments do make staying at Walt Disney World more enticing for families, especially during the 50th anniversary. When families stay at a Disney hotel they typically visit the parks on most days of their trip, and eat all of their meals at the parks or resorts. What kid wouldn’t want to eat dinner in a room themed after two of the most famous Disney movies of this generation?

Parents will continue to hand over hundreds of dollars a night just so their family can stay in a character-clad hotel room. In fact, Disney already has proof of concept with the princess-themed Royal Guest Room at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside, where families can see fireflies light up a Princess and the Frog-themed headboard and Aladdin’s magic carpet is on the floor.

With the 50th anniversary starting in just a few months Disney has a big task at hand with completing the refurbishments at both hotels so anxious visitors can book a room within a short monorail ride to Magic Kingdom Park. Rooms are already filling up at Walt Disney World and with the new Moana and The Incredibles-themed rooms debuting soon reservations will likely soar, proving Disney’s point that guests at their resort want more Disney, not less of it, even if the experience costs more.
