Owners of a cafe in Pakistan have got more than they probably bargained for following social media reactions to an emerging video they were captured in.

In a video clip seen on NDTV that has gone viral on Pakistan Twitter the cafe owners were captured taunting their business manager identified as Awais over his inability to speak English properly.

The one minute, 18 seconds video started with the cafe owners identifying themselves as Uzma and Dia and went on to call forward their manager who they mentioned had worked with them for nine years.

The video recorder then focused on the manager who appeared on scene in dark suit with both hands locked at his waist region, a posture that somewhat depicted humility.

One of the cafe owners, Dia then asks him how many English classes he had taken. To which the manager responded that in the course of a year and a half he had taken three courses in English.

Uzma then requested that he spoke English to everyone. The ladies burst into laughter as the manager speaks in English like they had requested.

Social media users didn’t however find the clip funny and criticized the cafe owners heavily just as they called for a boycott of their cafe shop.

Sharing the clip on Twitter Raza Ahmad Rumi, a journalist, slammed the ladies and commended the manager for putting up with it.

“This is just so sad. Class privelege, colonial hangover and depravity of Pakistani elite — all rolled into one clip. The hero here is this manager and my salam to him for his hard work, dedication and putting up with this!”

Another user @farrahraja praised him for his professionalism saying:

“Outright mean and disgusting. He seemed extremely professional the way he dealt with their cheap, low self esteem issues.”

@visionofw1 questioned:

“Why r they mocking the poor guy? He might not know how to speak good English but obviously knows his job well. Otherwise, why will they keep him for 5 years?”

Reacting to the viral video that got #BoycottCannoli trending on Twitter the management of Cannoli offered their own view of the footage on their Instagram page. They said:

“We are saddened and appalled by the reaction of the people, how they have misconstrued our banter with a team member.

“This video depicts the gup shup between us as a team, and is never meant or taken in a hurtful or negative way. If anyone was hurt or offended we apologise, however that was never our intention.”
