As a result of the federal government’s delay in implementing payment of the new minimum wage, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has threatened to embark on a strike.
According to Daily Trust, SSANU said members are still on the old minimum wage and have not been receiving the new payment despite concluded negotiations on the new wages.
The union, describing the delay as unfair said, it is causing financial hardships and difficulties for its members.
In a statement by its spokesman, Salaam Abdussobur, on Monday, March 2, the association said it might no longer guarantee industrial harmony if the government continues to delay the payment of the new minimum wage.
The university workers noted that it was unfortunate as it appeared they have been forgotten while other sectors have started enjoying the new wage.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Akwa Ibom state government has commenced payment of the N30,000 minimum wage to its workforce. The move is in line with the government’s promise of ensuring that the welfare of workers in the state is given priority.
A statement by the accountant-general of Akwa Ibom state, Pastor Uwem Andrew-Essien noted that the new minimum wage came into effect with the February 2020 salary with January arrears also paid.
