A funeral director was slapped with a parking fine while picking up a child’s body from a hospital mortuary.

Horrified Michael Fogg received the penalty notice through the post after visiting Sheffield Children’s Hospital last week.

The 54-year-old had visited the mortuary at the hospital in order to pick up the body and take it into their care.

But he says that the arrangements overran leaving the private ambulance parked outside for about twenty minutes.

Mr Fogg said: “I just don’t think it’s right, they know what we are doing.

“They know that we’re at the mortuary and a children’s hospital is the last place you think you’d want to profiteer from.

“I’ve spent 36 years in the funeral industry and I thought nothing would surprise me, ever.

The 54-year-old vowed to take it to court

Mr Fogg said: “I just don’t think it’s right, they know what we are doing.

“They know that we’re at the mortuary and a children’s hospital is the last place you think you’d want to profiteer from.

“I’ve spent 36 years in the funeral industry and I thought nothing would surprise me, ever.

“But this morning I came to work and I got a surprise.”

During the incident on October 4, Mr Fogg said there was no one in the car park when he arrived.

He said: “There’s usually an attendant who waves us through but he wasn’t there.

“So we parked up, went into the hospital and we spent about twenty minutes there.

“You’re supposed to be out in ten minutes but with the best will in the world, you can’t be held to the minute when you’re doing something like that.

“Sometimes it takes a little longer.

“When you’re dealing with a child who has passed away, you don’t just walk in and walk straight back out.”

Mr Fogg said he was ‘shocked’ by the letter informing him of the fine

He added: “It seems like someone wants to profiteer from a child that has passed away.

“We don’t charge for a child under the age of sixteen.

“And for this company to then go and try charge funeral directors for going about their job…if it were their child who had passed away, they’d probably think twice.”

But the defiant businessman vowed to take the matter to court if he needed to do so.

He said: “I think we should not pay it, let the charges build up and then we can go to court.

“And let a judge say whether we deserved to get a ticket or not.

“As far as I’m concerned, it will go to court.”

He shared his a photograph of his ticket on Facebook where it was met by disapproval.

One commenter raged: “Unbelievable. Some people have no integrity at all or compassion.”

Another added: “I think we should all chip in a penny. Turn up with £60 in pennies and tip them on their desk.”

When contacted by Mirror.co.uk a spokesman for the Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust said the fine had now been removed.

A spokesman said: “As soon as this was brought to our attention, we contacted the company that handles our car parking and the fine was immediately cancelled.

“The fines are automatically generated, but can be prevented by letting us know on the day in circumstances like this.

“Alternatively fines can be appealed, and in legitimate cases like this we will ensure no fine is paid.

“We will be reviewing our processes to avoid a similar situation in future.”
