UEFA to change European competition format

UEFA are expected to hold a critical meeting on Tuesday to discuss how to proceed with the Champions League and Europa League, and are reportedly contemplating changing the quarter final and semi final ties to one-legged affairs.

Football, and the world of sport, has been thrown into chaos due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

As of yesterday, all of the major football leagues have been suspended until April 3, and UEFA also announced the postponement of their competitions.

UEFA are expected to hold a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the best way to proceed with the remainder of the season once the peak of the disease subsides.

In order to wrap up the season as quickly as possible, the Daily Mirror states that UEFA are considering scrapping the usual two-legged format of the Champions League and Europa League in the quarter final and semi final stage, and instead utilising one-off games.

There are still four games of the Round of 16 left to be completed.

UEFA are hoping to stand by having the final of the Champions League in Istanbul on May 30.

The summit, which will be attended by all 55 member associates via video call, will also discuss moving Euro 2020 back a year, as looks likely.
