Two suspected meningococcal disease patients in North State – Action News Now

TEHAMA and SHASTA COUNTIES, Calif. – Two suspected cases of meningococcal disease have been identified in both Tehama and Shasta Counties.

The disease can be caused by bacteria by the name of neisseria meningitidis and is spread by the sharing of saliva with close or lengthy contact and is not caught by casual contact or air. Two most common types of the disease are meningitis and meningococcemia.

Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency officials said it is believed the patient was at Pulse Urgent Care in Redding and they are working with those who may have been contacted.

They say the patient was also in Tehama County so they are working along with health officials there.

As for the Tehama County case, health officials say a resident became ill and it is suspected to be meningococcal disease. The office has contacted those who had contact with the patient and those people are being treated with antibiotics.

Both cases are suspected and a confirmation lab test is being done to confirm.
