Omar asks Blinken about ICC pursuing war crime allegations
During the House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Monday, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., asked Secretary of State Antony Blinken about where victims of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity could pursue justice if local courts won’t look into those cases and the U.S. opposes the International Criminal Court taking such cases in the Afghanistan and Israeli-Palestinian conflicts.

Autopsy confirms Andrew Brown was shot in back of head by North Carolina police
Brown, 42, was shot as he tried to flee by car during a morning raid in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, a riverfront community where just over half of the roughly 18,000 residents are Black. The 11-page summary of the autopsy findings confirmed the findings of a private autopsy conducted at the request of Brown’s family and the account given last month by a local district attorney, who said no charges would be brought in the case. That decision prompted renewed protests in a country that has grappled with a wave of high-profile episodes of police killing Black men, leading to the largest civil-rights protest movement seen in the United States in decades.

California appeals court ruling upending assault weapons ban
California’s governor denounced in starkly personal terms a federal judge’s upending of the state’s restrictions on assault weapons as officials announced the filing Thursday of a formal notice that they will appeal the decision. The state already is appealing the same judge’s 2017 ruling against the state’s nearly two-decade-old ban on the sales and purchases of magazines holding more than 10 bullets, and his ruling last year blocking a 2019 California law requiring background checks for anyone buying ammunition.
