Fernandinho ready to commit 

Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho has said he’s ready to his extend his current contract, which runs out at the end of the season.

The Brazil international, who joined from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013, has been a central player for the club, helping to secure three Premier League titles during his time in Manchester.

“When I renewed at the end of 2018, we put a clause that if I reached certain goals, my contract would be renewed automatically,” Fernandinho said on Tuesday night.

“Conversations have already started, we talked about it last month. I am close to reaching those goals and renewing the contract, but we can only confirm it after signing.

“The club have already shown interest in me staying, I have also shown [my interest] in staying.”

Cavani update

Looks like Edinson Cavani will be staying put at PSG after all, according to the Daily Telegraph’s Jason Burt.

Both United and Chelsea have been linked to the 32-year-old, but it appears they’ve not made any recent attempts to land the out-of-favour forward.

Dortmund ‘adamant’ Sancho will stay

Borussia Dortmund are adamant that Jadon Sancho will be staying put this January, according to Sky Germany.

The England international is tied to the Germans until the end of June 2022 and has no release clause in his current contract.

The teenager has repeatedly been linked with a move away from Dortmund in light of his impressive form and reports of a falling out at the club.

But it seems Dortmund feel they would not be able to find a suitable replacement for the Englishman this window.

Manchester United are considering a move for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, according to ESPN.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said last night that the club needs to ‘strengthen’ in the January transfer window, and it seems the Old Trafford hierarchy believe a deal for Van de Beek could be secured.

Norwich defender Akin Famewo joins St Mirren on loan

St Mirren have signed Akin Famewo on loan from Norwich City subject to international clearance.

The 21-year-old English centre-half, who can also play at left-back, joins Saints from the English Premier League side until the end of the season. The former Luton and Grimsby defender revealed a discussion with ex-Saint Kenny McLean pointed him towards Paisley.

He told St Mirren’s official website: “I’m very happy to be here, I’ve heard a lot good things about the club. “I didn’t know a great lot about Scottish football but I know Kenny McLean and he’s told me a bit about it.

“I spoke to him about the move as he has links to the club and I was really keen to join.”

Marcos Alonso is another who could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Manchester United and Arsenal have reportedly submited offers for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani.

The 32-year-old has struggled for game time at PSG this season, having started just four games in Ligue 1 due to injury struggles and increased competition for his place following Mauro Icardi’s arrival last summer.

Icardi ‘not certain’ to remain with PSG

Mauro Icardi has not yet decided if he will remain with Paris Saint-Germain beyond his loan spell, according to his wife and agent Wanda Nara.

On the back of his fine form in Paris, having netted 14 goals in 18 games, it’s been suggested the Argentine will be joining PSG on a full-time basis. But the player’s partner has said “nothing is certain yet.”

“We’ll see,” she said. “Certainly, me travelling between Paris, Milan and Rome is easier to say than to do, but I’m able to.

Brendan Rodgers has told reporters that Leicester City have no need to sell their best players.

United need to ‘strengthen’

Let’s start with United, a club in desperate need of an overhaul.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted in the wake of last night’s defeat by City that the side needs to “strengthen” if it’s to make any progress in the second half of the season.

No decision has been made on Ashley Young, who has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, but Solskjaer maintains he wants to keep hold of his squad and bring in new faces before the transfer window closes.

“We have got a few months left of the season and we can’t weaken ourselves,” he said. “We have got to strengthen ourselves if any movement is going to happen.”
